Every August, Henry, his parents, and his big dog Mudge go camping. This year they are going to Bear Lake. They will cook food over a campfire and sleep in a tent. Henry hopes he sees a deer or a raccoon. But he isn't sure he wants to see a bear. After they set up camp, Henry and Mudge explore the woods and enjoy the lake. Henry and his parents eat hot dogs for dinner while Mudge chews on a big log. That night, as they all look up in the sky, they see thousands of stars. And when they go to sleep, they dream happy dreams.

Mudge likes them because they feed him mint candies. When Henry and Mudge leave the house to go exploring, they find a beautiful swimming pond. They come back to let everybody know, and soon all the grandpas want to go swimming. Henry's father says, "We'll have to go in our Skivvies."

Everyone will stay up late. Best of all, Henry says, there will be popcorn. Mudge gets very excited because popcorn is one of his favorites.

When the night comes, the boys and dogs gather in Patrick's attic and have a great time. They play all kinds of games, but nobody can play with the bowling set, because a bulldog keeps stealing the pins. They eat pizza and watch a movie about giant lizards. There is still lots of popcorn to eat before everybody falls asleep.

Wake up, Mudge! It's Henry's birthday! At first, the floppy dog wants to keep sleeping, but when Henry mentions birthday cake, and ice cream, Mudge's big brown eyes pop open. Join Henry, Mudge, and their friends on a sunny May day filled with balloons, games - and surprises for the little boy and his big dog. This birthday party is every child's dream, especially when it includes crackers from the sky!
