Joan of Arc (AD 1412 - 1431), nicknamed "The Maid of Orléans", is considered one of the greatest heroines of France for her courageous and pious role during the Lancastrian phase of the Hundred Years' War. As such, she was canonized a saint in the Roman Catholic church.
Joan was born to a peasant family in northeast France. When still a youth, she received visions of the archangel Michael, Saint Margaret, and Saint Catherine of Alexandria, telling her to support Charles VII and to recover France from English domination during the Hundred Years' War.
The unanointed King Charles VII dispatched Joan to the Siege of Orléans as part of a relief army. Through her efforts and heroic leadership, the siege was lifted only nine days later. This long-awaited victory boosted French morale and paved the way for a French victory.
On 23 May, 1430, she was captured by a group of French nobles allied with the English. She was later handed over to the English, who declared her guilty in a mock trial. She was burned at the stake on 30 May, 1431, at the age of 19.
