Olivia Henry, Wellbeing Practitioner in Hackney, shares experiences of her work and the value of understanding meaning and context in healthcare. Together we discuss the way this approach applies not only in community healthcare but also in acute and elective settings in secondary care. Olivia mentions writing, practices and frameworks which have informed her work - including Vicky Reynolds (https://vikkireynolds.ca/), the Strozi institute (https://strozziinstitute.org/) and the Power Threat Meaning Framework (https://explore.bps.org.uk/content/report-guideline/bpsrep.2018.inf299b0).NOTES AND REFERENCESAccountability on two things Liv said which they reflect were not ok:‘war against the poor’Using the word ‘war’ as a metaphor is not appropriate or respectful given the many places in the world people are currently suffering and dying in war. In terms of speaking to class struggle, I would prefer to use the terms poverty by design, or as Vikki Reynold’s talks about ‘structural abandonment’ of the poor. That is to say, poverty is not about choices made by those folks, but a necessary part of the operations of neoliberal capitalism.‘chairs not a natural way…’When I said this I was thinking in particular of ideas from Tada Hozumi (see the two links below) around European culture detaching people’s sense of awareness of their lower body, and how chairs contribute to this. I did not articulate this well, and using the word ‘natural’ contributes to ableism. To be clear, however we move and feel our bodies, with what is available and possible for each of us, is natural; and I believe there are particular ways western culture inhibits or limits the way we move and feel our bodies, which is disconnecting.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DgCx4OOQPIc https://www.instagram.com/p/B54EGTCgJw3/?igsh=MThuajEyd3BtcXBkeQ%3D%3D References Liv made in order mentioned:Power Threat Meaning Frameworkhttps://www.bps.org.uk/member-networks/division-clinical-psychology/power-threat-meaning-frameworkNkem Ndefohttps://lumostransforms.com/team/nkem-ndefo/Allan Schorehttps://www.allanschore.com/Strozzi Institutehttps://strozziinstitute.org/ Vikki Reynoldshttps://vikkireynolds.ca/Liv didn’t name this but what they said about white supremacy culture comes from this online book by Tema Okun:https://www.whitesupremacyculture.info/Dean Spadehttps://www.deanspade.net/
