Here is the legendary Ralph Richardson starring in 'Private Rooms' adapted from the original tale by J. B. Theatre Royal is a unique series of classic radio dramas produced in the 1950s by the late Harry Alan Towers. Starring the leading theatre artists of the day, it is the only series of radio dramas in which Laurence Olivier ever appeared. British acting icon Ralph Richardson (Our Man in Havana and Long Day's Journey Into Night) stars in this first installment of Theatre Royal’s collection of classic English and Irish radio performances.
In Private Rooms, a one-act by J.B. Priestely, is the story of a mature stage actor befriending a star-struck fan in Vienna (played by Margaret Lockwood). In the second half of this recording, Richardson stars in My Uncle Toby, which was adapted from Laurence’s Sterne’s Tristam Shandy, as a gentle, eccentric old ex-soldier who becomes obsessed with military fortifications after a gruesome battle wound.
Richardson’s sonorous voice and joyful performance make these vintage radio plays a sheer delight.
