このコンテンツについて
Throughout his baseball career and life Christy Mathewson often wrote down his observations and philosophies. The most famous collection of these writings was published by John N. Wheeler in the classic baseball book. He was asked many times to write an autobiography yet never completed one. The Mathewson Foundation and Eddie Frierson have undertaken to put all of these writings into book form for future generations to experience the wit, wisdom and observations of the great Hall of Famer, Christy Mathewson. The first of these books follows Pitching in a Pinch and is broken into three volumes titled Batting in a Break: The Early Innings, The Middle Innings and The Late Innings. These are writings up to the year 1916.
Next comes Managing in a Moment, which covers the writings of Mathewson 1916-18 while manager of the Cincinnati Reds leading up to and during the Great War. This book, Coaching in a Crisis, finishes out his collection 1919-1925. It is a marvelous and fascinating quarto of brand new never before published in book form Mathewson nonfiction writings.
This book includes several personal letters and thoughts as well as obscure interviews and articles attributed to Mathewson and likely helped along by his sportswriter friend, John N. Wheeler. You will marvel as the past jumps into the present and names long forgotten bring back the grand old days of the Dead Ball Era. Mathewson was the first to ever put his name to a column and to endorse products. He was universally adored and was the most famous person in the United States in the first two decades of the 20th century. We hope you will enjoy this volume as well as the entire Mathewson Foundation collection of "The Matty Books."
The entire series is transcribed and edited by Eddie Frierson.
