Historical fiction is a literary genre in which the plot takes place in a setting located in the past, so let's travel back to a time when California began and Californio ended. Hear the lost stories of desperate cowboys that were on the run for survival.
This novel is based on true stories of love and loss, brotherhood and family. These men were branded as bandits and outlaws by the new government that they suddenly lived under. Those that labeled them as such failed to mention the injustice being done to them, such as the 10,000 heads of households who were killed. They were executed for not understanding the new laws, written in a foreign language, that specifically targeted them. These actions forced them to retaliate. They were left with no choice but to become desperadoes yet were revered by the natives as fighters of freedom.
Chile was a guitarist, expert dancer, as well as charming and well educated. He could read and write in the language of the new government yet found himself alienated from the life he had planned. Chile transformed himself from being labeled as a broken thief, to a respected Captain and a friend to other desperados. He showed them how to succeed on the run for 23 years, while trying to survive in a world that was stacked against them. They were fighting a wild fire they couldn’t control.
The desperados were unable to settle down and could not have the wives and the families that they wanted. Chile always seemed to find love, but it always had to end. His love life led to a series of failures that broke his heart. He finally found a woman that may have changed it all. Was she the one, or would it be another mistake ending in disaster?
