A few key insights from Chapter 1.
1. In the first week of November 2016, just before Donald Trump’s election as president, Dylan Howard, editor-in-chief of the National Enquirer, issued an unusual order to a member of his staff to get all dirt on Trump out of the safe and get rid of it.
2. David Pecker, the CEO of the National Enquirer’s parent company American Media Inc., had known Donald Trump for decades. He had also hidden all the dirt he had collected on Trump over the past years.
3. After the election, Pecker told a reporter that criticizing Trump would count as criticism of AMI, as Trump was a personal acquaintance of his. Over the years, the two had formed a partnership that benefited both of them.
4. AMI also had an alliance with Harvey Weinstein. In 2015, when actress Ashley Judd alleged that a studio head had harassed her, indirectly referring to Weinstein, AMI reporters were asked to dig up negative items about her going to rehab.
