In this section of Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales, the knight Arveragus is abroad, while his wife Dorigen is courted by Aurelius. She rejects his advances, joking that she will marry him only if he can perform an impossible task. With the help of a magician, Aurelius does as Dorigen requested, and Arveragus allows Dorigen to keep her promise, despite her objections. Aurelius refuses her, however, when he sees the love they have for each other.
