The Whole Armour of God isn’t just a classic in Christian writing, it is a masterful study that uses metaphors and symbolism, to illustrate the importance of each individual piece of the Armour of God in a truly deep, and impactful way.
Born on May 6, 1864, in Halifax, Yorkshire, John Henry Jowett displayed an early interest in theology and literature, which one could say was a prophetic foreshadowing of his passion for them in his ministry later in life.
After he was ordained and launched into ministry, Jowett quickly gained recognition for his dynamic and compelling preaching style. His first pastorate was in St. James' Congregational Church in Newcastle, where he ministered from 1889 to 1895. It was during that period that his reputation began to grow, as did his effectiveness with the Sword of the Spirit. His ability to present the word of God in such a compelling way drew crowds of hungry listeners.
Jowett’s ability to connect with diverse audiences, coupled with his unwavering commitment to social justice, solidified his place as a respected leader within the American church. When he wasn’t preaching in churches, Jowett was a prolific author, contributing numerous articles and books on theology, spirituality, and Christian living. His works, such as The Preacher: His Life and Work, The High Calling, and of course, the enduring book you now have, dear listener, The Whole Armour of God. John Henry Jowett's life was tragically cut short when he passed away on August 1, 1923, at the age of 59.
Despite his relatively brief time on Earth, his legacy endured through his written words and the lives he touched through his ministry. Jowett's contributions to the Church continue to inspire and challenge believers to this day, and I hope that you too will be challenged, and set on fire for Jesus!
