  • AUThor Podcast Episode 7 - How I Became an Author, And You Can Too! Hilarious Healthcare Ads
    2025/03/17

In this seventh episode of the AUThor Podcast, I take a deep dive into my author journey. How did I learn how to write novels? What drove me to start telling stories and putting words on paper?

I then move into a hilarious medical product for flushing toilets when the water supply isn't working. There's a poor nurse who posed with the product in a hospital hallway and that picture is used for marketing. I'm sure it's not her dream job.

If you want to learn how to write a novel, follow my podcast and see how I did it. Scrivener, Vellum, and Atticus are my primary tools I use. ISBD from Bowker. Hire a proofreader and a cover designer, and get to work!

But first, watch the Master class done by @jamesscottbell and read his books on writing. Then start listening to the Essential Guide to Writing a Novel podcast on Spotify by James Thayer.
    https://jamesthayer.com/

Beta reader teams are important, as it someone who knows a good story and can tell you what didn't work. If it's a family member, make sure they can be honest and not hurt your feelings.

I also told a story of when we had a water leak in our new home during an ice storm that included loss of power.

I also talk about the book 7 Figure Fiction by Theodora Taylor. https://www.7FigureFiction.com is her website.

  • AUThor Podcast Episode 6 - Alcohol Consumption, Book Bans 📕🚫, and Work / School Notes
    2025/03/17

The sixth episode of the AUThor Podcast comes to you from our newly redesigned studios at Doodle Media headquarters.

In this week's episode, I rant about book bans and comment how they're not bans at all. The language is dumbed down. These "Banned books" are simply not offered to people for free. I use To Kill a Mockingbird as an example. Book bans were real, but this modern incarnation is nothing of the sort. If a book were banned, students couldn't bring it on campus, and teachers couldn't choose to teach a banned book. And since both of those are possible, it's not banned.

Does drinking alcohol improve your life? Is it possible something that you enjoy is actually a negative in your life?

Work notes and school excuses for absences are absurd, and I don't hold back when explaining why.

  • AUThor Podcast Episode 5 - Mansplaining Manspreading, Self-Love World Record, and Book Marketing
    2025/03/17

The fifth episode of the AUThor Podcast comes to you from Couples Sans Souci, in Ocho Rios, Jamaica.

In this week's episode, I rant about manspreading and mansplaining. I think it's just another thing used to knock men down, and I'm tired of it. Manspreading is simply how men sit comfortably. Mansplaining shows our natural tendency toward education. I don't care about manspreading anymore because the world just told us that we're more dangerous to a woman in the woods than a grizzly bear. So yes, let's manspread to keep women away from us, where they're safe. Obviously I'm using humor to make a point, I don't honestly think men and women should be separated in public spaces.

The current events section talks about a new world record for self love. Nine hours and fifty eight minutes. And what happened to the last two minutes. Just couldn't roll that odometer over? Run out of gas? Did he set out to break that record? What are the rules and stipulations for this event?

In the writing section, I talk marketing for my medical thriller promotion, Redemption. I had a swimsuit custom-printed with my book cover art and brought it to Jamaica. Fortunately, because she's awesome, she wore it around the resort to promote the book. What I didn't know, is the QR code wouldn't scan if stretched. So that was disappointing, but it was hilarious and got some attention which is what we wanted.

  • AUThor Podcast Episode 4 - Why Differences in Safety Exist Between Airline Industry and Medicine
    2025/03/17

In this fourth episode of the author podcast, we discuss the differences in the safety between the airline industry and the house of medicine. What makes them different? What unique challenges do each have?

What would it look like if medicine could perform the way the airline industry does?

The airline industry is a significant benefit of planning and forethought. Anesthesia is a similar set up most of the time, though there are certain emergent cases as well. Emergency medicine is like the single dirt runway airport on an island that often has chickens and goats standing where you want to land. Despite these difficulties, we still do our best.

The recent crash in Washington DC with American Eagle flight 5342 led me to move this discussion up. Absolutely Horrific outcome, and something that should have been preventable. In this video, I discuss the Swiss cheese affect and how despite multiple layers of safety, errors can still slip through if the shortcomings align.

In the writing section, I talk about my psychological romance drama book, It Happened in the Loft. This book explores PTSD and using EM DR to help patients recover from this. https://amzn.to/4jxk5Lb

  • AUThor Podcast Episode 3 - Insurance, PBMs, Laughter, Govee LED Lights
    2025/03/17

This is the third episode of the AUThor Podcast featuring Dr. Brian Hartman, Emergency Medicine Physician and Fiction Author.

    Govee light link: https://amzn.to/4jAUpNs

I created this podcast to offer my insights on the world of medicine, writing, politics, humor, and so much more. I've spent 20 years as an ER doctor working in both urban and rural settings, in resource-rich as well as resource-poor environments. I've seen tens of thousands of patients and talked to many more family members along the way.

I'm a husband and father, as well as a fiction author. I have eight books in print, most with strong medical themes.

My main series is a medical thriller staring ER physician Dr. Bryce Chapman. Redemption is book one, followed by Deception, Vengeance, and Hanging By a String.

I have two psychological thrillers, Lake Sinclair and It Happened In the Loft.

I started a new eco-terror thriller series with Murder Burger. Seeds of Change is the second book and will release in 2025.

My first Christian fiction novel, Sacrificial Touch, released on Christmas, 2024. This follows Dr. Cameron Turner, an ER doctor who is killed by a patient and has a near-death experience with God. He receives the gift to heal anyone of anything, but it comes at a price. One month of his life expectancy vanishes every time he uses it. This takes a look at altruism in medicine and how society reacts to a miracle worker in its midst.

    This Episode Contains:

Opening Rant - Insurance and PBMs, how they scheme to increase the cost of healthcare and skim as much profit from patients as possible. And what can be done about it.

Laughter as Medicine - I take a look at a hilarious video of a neuro exam while it takes a swipe at ER doctors. But as with much satire, there's an element of truth. Why do we order so many tests? Find out inside.

Things I like - Govee LED lights! Check out their awesome product lists on Amazon or their website. https://amzn.to/4jAUpNs

    This Episode Contains:

Opening Rant - Is listening to an audiobook considered reading? No! It's not reading. It's listening. Before you attack me, listen to the rant and hear me out.

Current Events - California Wildfires and my take on the situation. A typical blend of bad luck, poor planning, and humans.

Writing Update - Discussion of Sacrificial Touch, my new Christian Fiction medical thriller. It follows an ER doctor who is killed by a patient and meets God, only to receive an incredible gift. The ability to heal anyone of anything. But this comes with a catch. Every time he uses it, he loses a month of his life expectancy. Read the book to learn how the world reacts, and how he deals with the sudden fame. It will make you cry, and consider why we're here on earth.

The podcast will have several components.

Opening Rant - A discussion of whatever I'm motivated to talk about at the time of recording. This first episode touches on anxiety and depression, and why it's such a problem today. Both with prevalence and how we treat it.

Laughter as Medicine - I posted a video and FB post about the blizzard and a prank I pulled on the readers.
