Abuse in the Church Part 1: The World Intervenes

  • サマリー

  • This episode of Big Little Issues is the first episode in our three-part series Abuse in the Church.

Content Warning: the following episode contains references to accounts of child sexual abuse which may be distressing for some people. We recognise the significance of survivor and victim stories and acknowledge the strength and resilience shown by survivors to bravely share their stories. For support, contact emergency services on 000, Lifeline 13 11 14 or Blue Knot Foundation 1300 657 380.

In Part 1: The World Intervenes, background is provided into how the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse was established. Dr Janice McRandal then speaks to lawyer, Sarah Lim, who is the National Director of the Uniting Church in Australia Redress Ltd. Sarah is deeply committed to the needs of survivors of institutional abuse and restoration of relationships for survivors, the Church and the broader community. We hear from Sarah about how the recommendations from the Royal Commission have been implemented in the Uniting Church. Unfortunately, it becomes clear that there is a worrying disconnect between these recommendations and real change in our churches, where often the bare minimum of accepted practices is taken up. What would it mean if our churches implemented real change - not just legally required child safety training - but a desire to address the theological ideas that have fostered cultures of abuse, including the theological ideas that support ecclesial structures of autocracy, secrecy, and self-protection.
