  • Power Up Education; Sex education with Kerri Isham, Pt. 1
    2024/08/15

In this episode, we talk with the amazing Kerri Isham. Kerri is a fellow SEA member (Sex Education Alliance) and the founder and lead educator at Power Up Education. Kerri creates programming for adults who care for children and trains them to develop a culture of child protection. Programming includes sexual health education for children and youth with special needs and information regarding the long-term impacts of pornography (plus so much more). Why? Because Kerri, like me, believes it takes a village to create change for our most precious resource - our children. Listen as we discuss the massive responsibility of being a sex educator, the connection between sex education and mental health, and grandparents as sex educators. Kerri also shares her recipe for sex education curricula for youth, including early exposure, honesty, consent, how to identify trusted adults, and the difference between safe, unsafe, and secret touch. My delightful guests, Becca Karpinski (VP of Strategy & Organizational Effectiveness at Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest) & Chrissy Cmorik (Director of Education Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest), discuss their work with Sex Ed To-Go. Sex Ed To-Go is a digital sex education platform that offers free, remote learning for parents, students and educators (and others) interested in accessing evidence-based and current information about sexual topics. We walk through, step by step, how to optimally access the platform as a parent. We also discuss how Sex Ed To-Go is used across the world and the planning that goes into serving a diverse client base. Trauma informed sex education is explained and Becca & Chrissy make some great recommendations for their “go-to” sex education resources for their own families.
