  • Ep. 34 - Bioactive Live Q&A - Soil Microscopy Part 2: Diving Deeper into microorganisms
    2024/10/12

Part 2 Soil Microscopy with Organic Alexa (@organic.alexa on IG and http://www.organicalexa.com)

This week we slow it down and start by looking at unhealthy, traditional agricultural soil that lacks bio-diversity in microorganisms. Alexa then shows an active and bio-diverse sample of cedar leaf mold.

We dissect the organisms that are present in the healthy soils and get a better understanding on how a diverse soil can be mimicked in compost teas, extracts and other inputs.

Alexa does an amazing job and really breaking down the nutrient cycle by explaining the different organisms: bacteria and fungi are the food for the protozoa and nematodes and by these organisms being present and processed, they are essentially cycling the nutrients in your soil.

Understanding how to 'steer' your teas to be more bio-diverse (bioactive) and what it is to look for in those inputs is a great way to elevate your game.

Then we get into what different inputs look like under the micrscope (compost teas, compost, worm castings)

    The community questions this week:

    1. 53:00 - When scoping a tea, should one collect a sample of foam or the liquid? Is there a protocol for tea that differs from scoping soil?
    2. 54:40 - What's a good starter microscope?
    3. 56:30 - What books you would recommend to reference different microbes?
    4. 57:40 - Why do mycorrhizae makes bio photons?
    5. 1:01:20 - Thoughts on adding green sand and grasses versus using a diverse cover crop?
    6. 1:05:00 - What am I getting by just using castings in a short/soak extract (compost extract) rather than a bubbled tea (aerated compost tea)?
    7. 1:11:55 - Whats the bigger difference between compost tea and worm tea?
    8. 1:15:45 - Is using a compost tea better than top-dressing compost?

    2. How to make IPMO
    3. Handling spider mites using natural farming inputs

    Community Questions:

    1. Can you make IPMO with dead pest carcasses and how to effectively collect pests from your grow area to use in an IPMO preparation
    2. What are the best plants to use to detoxify soil and what should I do with that plant matter afterwards?
    3. What inputs would you recommend for a small home grower to use in a city without resources to go full KNF or Jadam?
    4. Has Chris Trump ever used predatory insects?
    5. Can you keep taking IMO1 collections from IMO3 and still have the efficacy of IPMO?
    6. For making IPMO, would taking dead bugs that have mycelium on them from inside your window sill and adding that to an IMO box be useful to collect more predatory fungi?
    7. If I have already made the KNF wetting agent, can I add herbal extracts such as rosemary, thyme and sage oils I have made, or could I use them in my OHN?
    8. Can you add insect frass to LABs to make a similar thing to IPMO?
    9. Is there a specific type of rice that works best for IMO collection?
    10. Are there any inputs that you use with cedar wood? Can cedar bark be used as an OHN ingredient or part of an IPM spray?

  • Ep. 31 - Bioactive Live Q&A - Building a regenerative aquaponic ecosystem indoors
    2024/09/22

This week we are talking with Josh from @yellowskunkfarms who has dedicated the past year to building his aquaponic-inspired, regenerative garden ecosystem.

Josh opens up the book on his instagram for how he has made his permanent structure up until this point and we get the opportunity to pick his brain, add insight and vicariously become a part of this amazing project and homage to natures beauty.

By incorporating a stream, with flowing water and natural species of aquatic life, he will be able to provide nutrient dense water to his plants which will grow around the perimeter and in the center of his ecosystem.
