  • Episode #36: Getting Outside: Figuratively & Literally -- Careers Beyond Higher Ed
    2020/02/17

On @BreakDrink episode no. 36, Jeff grills Laura about her new job and what it means to not be working in higher ed any more -- or the differences between interviewing and finding jobs outside the ivory tower. In other updates, Laura is American (officially), Jeff’s smart speakers don’t recognize his voice, Laura lives in WA state, Jeff’s been visiting all the TX state parks to fish, and we still love podcasts (of course) ... and recommend a few. We chat a bit about the differences between job search and acclimation from higher ed to industry, and then some. Take a listen as we meander about our own life, career goals, and dream places we’d like to live in the future. How’s 2020 going for y’all? What transitions or life changes are going through in the past few months? How’s it going?

  • Episode #34: Make No Mistake
    2019/09/13

On @BreakDrink episode no. 34, Jeff and Laura talk about what it means for our students to make mistakes in the digital age. We talk about the recent episode of Hidden Brain’s case from the “You Can’t Hit Unsend” example and also talk about how we work with and support individuals who do mess up by posting something or stating something you regret online. It is not that easy just to pick up the Pink Pearl to erase it away. Your digital traces stay forever... or a screenshot can be taken and shared.

We end up talking about how to build resilience in learners early on, and even how the encourage persistence, character development, ethics, etc. in children now for being a future positive citizen who comes to our higher ed campuses and workplaces. Are we preparing our learners (our own kids or others) to think critically, question their behaviors, and think about their social/emotional selves even before they hit the screen or live online? Then we digress and discuss how we talk to our fur children as well. #woof #gooddog
