The unusual polish application and lack of struggle suggested she may have been dead when it was applied, fueling speculation of a perverse motive. Leads, including a suspicious white car and a nail polish purchase, led nowhere. In 2019, a witness recalled an unsettling encounter with a man resembling the Hwaseong serial killer, though police cautioned about memory distortion. The case, unresolved, remains a haunting mystery, with ongoing efforts to uncover the truth and bring justice for Hyun-ah.

    In August 2017, journalist Kim Wall mysteriously disappeared after boarding the private submarine Nautilus, owned by Danish entrepreneur Peter Madsen. After Madsen was rescued from the sinking submarine, he claimed Wall had left the vessel safely, but inconsistencies in his account led police to suspect foul play. As the investigation unfolded, Madsen's contradictory statements and eventual admission of dismembering Wall's body raised grave concerns, especially after parts of her remains were discovered in the sea. Autopsy results revealed multiple stab wounds and signs of violence, contradicting Madsen's claims of accidental death. Ultimately, he was charged with murder, sexual assault, and desecration of a body, found guilty in April 2018, and sentenced to life imprisonment without parole, while his failed attempt to escape prison in 2020 highlighted the tragic outcome of a case that captivated the world.
