Matthew de Grood, the son of a veteran Calgary police officer, was attending the party and suddenly began attacking the attendees with a knife. The attack was unprovoked, and the victims had no prior conflicts with him. De Grood fled the scene but was later apprehended by the police. The victims were Lawrence Hong, 27, Kaiti Perras, 23, Jordan Segura, 22, Zackariah Rathwell, 22, and Josh Hunter, 23.

During his trial, it was revealed that de Grood was suffering from severe mental illness, including schizophrenia, at the time of the murders. He was found not criminally responsible due to his mental state and was subsequently placed in a secure psychiatric facility
