  • Helping Homeless Veterans - Access Housing Inc. DC
    2024/10/11

Access Housing Inc. DC was the first nonprofit in Washington, DC to house homeless veterans. Its founder was an Air Force veteran who first noticed homeless men and women in the woods near the Watergate Hotel in 1986. He felt compelled to help.

With time, he purchased two buildings and transformed them into individual housing units. In 2024, AHI is celebrating 25 years of service. During this time, AHI has housed thousands of homeless veterans, ranging in age from 18-92. In fact, AHI has housed a homeless veteran who was at D-Day in Normandy, a homeless fighter pilot who became a POW during Vietnam (he was rescued by a US Marine), and so many other incredible men and women.

AHI believes that no one should be homeless, especially veterans. They sacrificed to serve us, now it's our turn to serve them. As an Army brat myself whose parents are buried at Arlington National Cemetery, how could I not support this fantastic group? I hope you will listen to their story and engage with them too. They welcome in-kind and financial donations, and volunteers too.

Learn more about AHI by calling (202) 561-VETS or visit https://www.accesshousingdc.org.
