  • In today’s Bible passage, we see a Samaritan woman who had no satisfaction in her heart. This Samaritan woman had had five husbands apart from the present one, and yet she still was not satisfied. In her heart, she was spiritually thirsty and void, and ashamed before even the people of this world. As she was living in hiding, she needed the water of everlasting life that only the Lord could give.
    When Jesus was sitting by the well, the Samaritan woman came there to draw water. To have fellowship with her, Jesus began to speak to her, asking her, “Give me a drink.” The woman was dumbfounded by this, for a Jewish man was asking her for a drink, even though she was a disgraced Samaritan. This is because at that time, the Samaritans were despised by the Jews. Their forefathers were originally Israelites, but of mixed blood, a result of the many invasions that Israel had suffered, and so they were despised by the Jews, even though they partially shared the same blood.
