Changing the Narrative of Grief & Death [With Emily Vass]

  • サマリー

  • Much of how our culture approaches the topic of grief and death is both unhealthy and unhelpful. In today's conversation, we talk with Emily Vass about the wisdom that indigenous cultures can offer us about death and grief.

Emily's most important advice? Give yourself time to grieve. We need far more time than most people are willing to admit when have a major loss. You will not recover in a few months. Many cultures devote a year (minimum) to grieve the loss of a parent, spouse, or child.

She also suggests we need to begin being more honest about how we feel when we're grieving and offers a few scripted phrases to respond truthfully and graciously to those asking how we are. They include:

    • "I wish I were fine."
    • " I'm struggling, but I'm choosing good."
    • "That's a loaded question, but I love you for asking."
