  • Episode 4: Dr. Joshua Levy

    Joshua Levy, Ph.D., C.Psych., has the distinction of being the oldest training and supervising analyst at the Toronto Institute of Psychoanalysis. Dr. Levy has published widely on dreams. He is an advocate for learning to appreciate multiple analytic perspectives. He leads day-long seminars on analytic listening and is currently guiding a Canada-wide study group on psychoanalytic supervision. He is very involved in the Toronto psychoanalytic scene and it is not surprise that in 2019 he was the recipient of the International Forum for Psychoanalytic Education’s Hans Loewald Prize for his work on Analytic Stalemate and Psychoanalytic Supervision. This award recognizes extraordinary contributions to psychoanalytic education. In this episode, we discuss among other things his upcoming Freud Café Presentation on Friday, May 31st, 2024 in Toronto during the 45th Annual Canadian Psychoanalytic Congress. His presentation is entitled “Are You Empathic” and in it, he will ask, What is empathy? What isn’t it? What did Freud say and not say about it? Can empathy be taught?

    Dr. Oren Gozlan is the Programming Chair of the Scientific Committee for the 45th Congress of the Canadian Psychoanalytic Society, “The Future is History” (May 30-June 2, 2024, King Edward Hotel, Toronto). Oren is a clinical psychologist and a psychoanalyst in private practice. His book Transsexuality and the Art of Transitioning: A Lacanian Approach won the American Academy & Board of Psychoanalysis’ annual book prize for books published in 2015. He is also the winner of the Symonds Prize (2016). His edited collection titled Critical Debates in the Transsexual Studies Field: In Transition was a runner up for the 2019 Gradiva Award. He is also the winner of the 2023 Miguel Prados prize (CPS). He is past Chair of the Scientific Committee at the Toronto Psychoanalytic Society and on faculty at the Toronto Institute of Psychoanalysis. Karen and Oren discuss the theme of the congress, the exciting line up of keynote speakers, including Jan Abram, British Psychoanalytic Society, and Richard Simpson, CPS-SCP, the state of psychoanalysis past, present, and future, and more.

    Documentary Filmmaker Alan Zweig rose to prominence with his “Mirror Trilogy" of documentaries, Vinyl, I, Curmudgeon, and Lovable. Alan’s first-person, into-the-mirror video diaries place himself and his neuroses at the centre of his films, films that capture what it means to be obsessional, lonely, cynical…human. Later works--A Hard Name, Fifteen Reasons to Live, Hope, Coppers-- explore painful subjects like addiction and PTSD. His current project, Ending it All, (NFB/52 Media Inc.) examines the complexity and mystery of suicide through the lives of the departed and those left behind. In this episode of Conversations in Psychoanalysis Today, Karen and Alan enjoy a conversation about point-of-view filmmaking, the similarities between documentary interviewing and psychoanalytic listening, and the healing power of relationships.
