Employers across the country are now using credit reports to as a part of their hiring procedures. The subject of using credit reports in the application process is becoming a standard hiring practice. One of the prevailing issues is that now employers outside of financial institutions are using credit reports as a basis of hiring. However, using credit reports as a standard practice can have damaging and legal consequences to employers. Some states are prohibiting employers from using credit reports as a standard practice for applicants. Some employers are taking this practice of reviewing credit reports too far such as non-financial jobs. This is a huge problem. This begs the question, Should your prospective employer be allowed access to your credit report? Should your current employer be allowed access to review your credit report and if it is questionable, terminate you? Should employees have some protection against these practices?
