• Rick Quinn and Dave Chisholm talk Spectrum
    2024/09/20
I don't often dip back much and reminisce about my time in the music business. I'm a don't look back type of guy, but I couldn't resist on today's show sharing an anecdote or three because this project is all about music. I've got two new guests on the show with me, Rick Quinn and Dave Chisholm, who are promoting their new project Spectrum from Mad Cave Studios. There's going to be nothing like this on the shelves, it has the feel of an experimental piece of music and we spend a fair bit of time talking about Dave's approach artistically to this rather unorthodox story and I get to hear all about one of the most unique antagonists I've seen in quite some time, Echo, one of the Sustained who are a group of elemental beings who can alter reality through music, and she looks like Brigitte Nielsen got hooked up with Prince's clothing designer with a Cruella Deville fetish. It's memorable as is everything else about the project. I'm a big fan of Dave's work (Enter The Blue, Chasin’ The Bird: Charlie Parker in California, and Miles Davis and the Search for Sound) and wholeheartedly believe this is his best yet. Make sure to check it out. From the publisher Melody Parker is losing her mind. She’s living on the streets of Seattle during the WTO protests of 1999. She is seeing things. Androids. Aliens. Pigs in high fashion. And a creature named Echo—one of the Sustained: elemental beings with the power to alter reality through music. She invites Melody to join her as she brings about the end of the world. As Melody tries to escape this strange woman, suppressed memories from across vast spans of time flood into her awareness, bringing her very identity into question. You don’t want to miss this stunning new release from writer Rick Quinn and music-comic-specialist Dave Chisholm. • Allen Wu talks Shentu
    2024/09/17
I learn so much from every comic creator that comes on the Cryptid Creator Corner, whether they've been making comics for decades or they've just made one of their first comics, like today's guest: Allen Wu. Allen comes on the Cryptid Creator Corner to chat about SHENTU, which you can get here: https://thcomics.myshopify.com/ SHENTU is about an immortal rabbit girl who journeys through Ancient China healing those she meets and desperately trying to recreate the elixir of life. Allen talks about how he originally contemplated this as an animated series, but pivoted to create a comic along with artist Davi Hallyson and letterer Tom Lynott. Allen talks about the different scripting processes he went through and how he became hooked on comics once Davi's artwork started to hit his inbox. Allen plans on taking a SHENTU anthology to Kickstarter in a few months. You can sign up to be notified about SHENTU: Memories of Spring here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/allenyorkwu/shentu-memories-of-spring Check out all of Allen's projects on his website: https://allenyorkwu.com/ Our episode sponsors unSeen/unHeard: Disability and Neurodivergence Comic Anthology on Kickstarter Don't miss this 64-page, 12 story anthology where at least 50% of each creative team is comprised of people who are neurodivergent or have a disability. • James Asmus and Jim Festante talk Survival Street: The Radical Left
    2024/09/13
When the first volume of Survival Street came out, I hadn't seen anything like it on shelves and it ended up immediately being one of my picks for the first annual Comic Book Yeti ICE or Indy Comics Excellence Awards in 2022. Who wouldn't love a satirical take on the current sad dominance of corporate culture in America and what a complete take over might look like in a not too distant dystopian future. Couple that with former children's show puppets being the aggressive catalyst to take on our corporate overloads, I was in love. Way back then writer James Asmus came on the show to talk about the project and how it was a mechanism to help overcome the anxiety from the pressures of modern society that we all feel. Now he's back with co-writer Jim Festante for another round promoting the second volume of Survival Street: The Radical Left from Dark Horse Comics. It gave me a rare opportunity to ask not about comic influences but comedic influences for the writing duo, how their partnership works, and even compare a few hopeful notes about where we're all headed. Make sure to visit their website to see what else they've been working on. From the publisher The political satire action-adventure hit series returns! After America is sold off to private companies, this A-B-C-Team of ex-entertainers rescues kids from cruel company towns. But Portland can’t hold everyone, and the cracks are about to break... Prepare for a radical departure in the series Library Journal called a “blisteringly satirical mash-up of Sesame Street and Robocop.” A candy coating of pop culture madness, humor, cartoonishly absurd hyper-violence, and just enough hope to keep holding on. • Joe Corallo and Butch Mapa talk Kardak the Mystic
    2024/09/12
Things have been busy here at the Cryptid Creator Corner and we have another brand new episode this week. JOE CORALLO RETURNS and brings with him first time guest BUTCH MAPA. Joe and Butch have teamed up on the one-shot of Kardak the Mystic, which was out from Archie Comics on August 14th. Joe & Butch discuss how they pulled elements from Kardak’s history to create a new story for both old and new fans. Butch talks about the character designs and creating the look of Kardak’s powers and how Ellie Wright’s colors elevates and complements his artwork. I had a great time chatting with Joe and Butch and this conversation left me wanting more Archie Comics! From the publisher All John Cardy ever wanted was to be recognized for his talents at magic tricks and sleight of hand. He's talented, but not enough to get noticed for it until he comes across a (unbeknownst to him) cursed ruby. This ruby grants John the power of invisibility. As Kardak the Mystic, he performs feats no one else can with this magic. Unfortunately for him, going invisible isn't just a trick of the eyes, but rather entering another realm parallel to our own. And something inside that realm wants to use Kardak to enter our world for dark purposes. • Jimmy and Bobby Gaspero - The Baltimore Comic Con Special
    2024/09/11
This is a very special episode of the Cryptid Creator Corner as I'm joined by my brother Bobby, the Cryptid Creator Corner's number one most dedicated fan, to talk about Baltimore Comic-Con. Bobby and I have been attending BCC for a few years now and we absolutely love it. It really caters to both comic creators and comic fans. This year it is September 20th through the 22nd at the Baltimore Convention Center. Bobby and I get together to talk about some of our favorite memories from past cons and talk about who we're looking forward to meeting this year. • Zack Kaplan talks Dark Empty Void
    2024/09/10
Zack is back! Zack Kaplan that is, and this time I managed to steal him away from Byron to talk about his and Chris Shehan's newest series Mad Cave Studios Dark Empty Void. This first issue reminded me a bit of The Abyss (which is one of my favorite movies) so I can't wait to see where the rest of the series goes. We also talked about Kill All Immortals, issue #3 is coming out September 25th, the trade of Beyond Real that drops September 18th, and The Midnight Shadows graphic novel being released October 2nd. I've been a big fan of Zack's writing since I first came across Port of Earth, so we had plenty to talk about. This was a fantastic conversation! Be sure to check out Zack's newsletter too: https://zackkaplan.substack.com/ From the publisher Scientists have created a stable, microscopic black hole in a secret underground compound, but when they lose control, the black hole spews out a cosmic maelstrom, strange dangerous creatures, and most surprisingly…a mysterious human teenage girl. Now, a depressed but brilliant psychologist must help her estranged husband and the other scientists solve the mystery and close the black hole before it consumes all of Earth. Dare to witness a cosmic horror series that will amaze and terrify you, with hit comic creator Zack Kaplan (Kill All Immortals, Beyond Real, Mindset), fan-favorite artist Chris Shehan (The Autumnal, House of Slaughter), rising star colorist Francesco Segala (Nights, House of Slaughter) and Ringo-nominated letterer Justin Birch (Road of Bones, House of Slaughter). • Jason Loo talks Dazzler and Werewolf by Night
    2024/09/06
I’m joined by a new guest on the show hanging out with me today, Jason Loo. Jason is a Toronto based Eisner Award winner and a Harvey Award nominee with credits on both sides of the isle as an artist and a writer with creator owned projects The Pitiful Human-Lizard, Afterlift, and The All Nighter and although he’s no newcomer to Marvel, he is tackling not one but two series out this fall with Werewolf By Night and the Dazzler mini-series creating a new soundtrack for everyone’s favorite disco queen which will be a part of the From the Ashes storyline redefining the X-Universe post Krakoa. These couldn't be farther apart tonally. Jason wrote new songs for Marvel's beloved disco queen and this version of the character is inspired by Taylor Swift, who knows if she'll have an NFL boyfriend, and Werewolf by Night breaks new ground in Marvel's 50 plus years of storytelling launching their new Red Band formatting, a Parental Advisory designation promising more blood and violence than ever before. Dazzler from Marvel SO BRIGHT THIS STAR! DAZZLER, Marvel's glittering mutant songstress, has been in and out of the limelight over the years - but now the time has finally come for her to take center stage! Dazzler embarks on a new world tour, the culmination and celebration of her entire musical career! And along for the ride is her new road crew: Domino, Strong Guy and Multiple Man! But while Dazzler may be ready to focus on her music, her celebrity-mutant status and a violent attack may sideline the entire endeavor before it's even begun… Each issue features original song lyrics from Ali's notebook! Don't miss the concert - and comic - event of the year! Werewolf by Night from Marvel Full moon rise—werewolf kill! Jack Russell has been trying to live a simple life—but in the deadly and dramatic wake of the Blood Hunt, his life is about to be turned upside down in ways he never imagined! With new enemies hoping to extract a (literal) pound of flesh and Jack unsure if he can be trusted around old allies and a lost love, the original Werewolf by Night is in for the fight of his life… and he’s in it alone! • Max Hoven talks Liquid Kill
    2024/09/05
I'm joined today by newcomer on the show Max Hoven. I was first introduced to his work a few years ago with It Eats What Feeds It and Max is back at it again with the same creative team, co-writer and friend Aaron Crow and artist Gabriel Iumazark, with a fantastic cyberpunk horror project called Liquid Kill which has been described as Ghost In The Shell meets John Wick. The first six issues are in the wild now and are being collected into a trade with arc two green lit and scheduled to be released a little later this year from Massive Publishing. Gabriel's stunning artistic work reminds me a lot of Sean Murphy's work on Tokyo Ghost and if you are looking for a dark futuristic sci-fi read, make sure to pick this up. I loved it. Max also has a great YouTube channel called Indie Comic Empire with videos designed and tailored to help other comics creators navigating the sometimes rough waters of publishing and producing their work. Make sure to check it out. From the publisher For the staff and clientele of a mysterious island hotel, it’s just another night of luxury and vice until members of Liquid Kill (a notoriously violent, all-female militia), lay siege. Demanding compliance or death as they gather intelligence, the adrenaline quickly floods the halls as the team eliminates all threats with ease in their search for their kidnapped leader. That is until something is unleashed… something hungry.
