Dad Always Told Me

  • Being a parent isn’t something you’re instantly good at. Instead, it’s a long process of learning how to mash together skills from other areas of your life—like your work and your hobbies—so you can do useful things for your family. Like learning to cook, fixing up the house, and setting good goals as a parent.

And that's where Dad Always Told Me comes in.

Hosted by me, Josh Haroldson (@joshharoldson)—stay-at-home dad, problem-solver, freelancer, copywriter, chef, pro photographer, handyman, and everyday adventurer—each episode is a short (2-15 minute) exploration into the connections I'm finding between creativity, problem-solving, and the funny business that is life as a parent.

Of course, please, don't take my advice too seriously. Or at all. This is meant to be a fun podcast that's full of sweetness and light.

But, as Dads do, I'll still try my best to share some easy—and possibly useful—tips, lessons, and frameworks you can apply right now to your life as a parent. You know, the kind of stuff I want to pass on to my kid so maybe one day he'll say, "You know, Dad always told me..."

And remember. Don't quit. Make it easy.

  • 4. [Dad Shorts] Escape to Your Backyard
    2022/06/15

What are Dad Shorts? Well, just like your dad's cargo shorts, these episodes might not be the longest episode in your podcast lineup, but they're packed with function.

In this case, just one quick product, recipe, or observation you can toss into your cargo pocket that will help you enjoy the funny business that is life as a parent.

And for today's Dad Short, I'm sharing one of my favorite places to go on what I call an everyday adventure whenever I need a few minutes to relax. In this case, my backyard.

  • 3. Learning to Cook as a Parent
    2022/06/09

As anyone with a kid knows your relationship with food changes as they get older. As a baby, it's all about breastfeeding and precisely dosed bottles of milk and formula. Then solid food comes into play and suddenly food becomes a thing you have to think about. A lot.

Of course, as a self-certified meal, skipper, this is a problem. Especially when you're forced to confront the fickle gaping maw of a toddler, and with it, the knowledge that someday that cute smile will be a portal to a bottomless pit that we're responsible for filling.

And without an unlimited takeout budget or a private chef on the payroll, that means somebody has got to cook dang near every day.

This is the story about the "aha" moment when we started to notice the frameworks behind cooking. The kind of stuff that makes it easy — or at least easier — to cook every day.
