Jim highlights the challenges and joys of running a family business, emphasizing the importance of quality, consistency, and community connections that have made Frank's a local favorite. Discovering Lake County: The Heartwarming Legacy of "Frank's for the Memories" In this episode of "Discovering Lake County," we dive into the rich history and enduring legacy of "Frank's for the Memories," a beloved restaurant in Mundelein, Illinois. Celebrating 40 years of operation, Jim, the current owner, shares the story of how his parents founded the restaurant in 1984 and the journey that has made it a staple in the community. From the significance of Buffalo-style hot dogs and wings to the challenges of running a family business, this episode offers a heartfelt glimpse into what makes "Frank's for the Memories" a cherished local gem. The Origins of "Frank's for the Memories" A Dream Realized Jim begins by recounting the early days of the restaurant, which his parents started with a dream of opening a hot dog stand inspired by the charbroiled hot dogs they enjoyed in Buffalo, New York. Initially, the idea was to set up a small trailer, but it eventually evolved into a brick-and-mortar establishment. The name "Frank's for the Memories" was conceived by Jim's mother during a car ride back from Buffalo, inspired by a song from Bob Hope. This creative touch reflects the family-oriented nature of the business, which has seen contributions from various family members over the years. The Addition of Wings Interestingly, wings were not part of the original menu. A pivotal moment came when a cousin from Buffalo suggested they include wings, a staple of Buffalo cuisine. Despite initial hesitation, a successful taste test with Jim's brother and his friends led to wings becoming a signature item. This decision has since become a defining feature of the restaurant, drawing customers from near and far. The Challenges and Rewards of a Family Business Perseverance and Dedication Jim reflects on the challenges his parents faced in the early years, crediting their perseverance for laying the foundation for the restaurant's success. His mother played a crucial role, working long hours to ensure the restaurant's success while his father continued his sales job. Jim acknowledges that the restaurant business is demanding and requires a strong commitment from everyone involved. Transition to Full-Time Operation The decision to transition to a full-time operation came after about two years, as the business began to pick up. Jim's father was able to focus entirely on the restaurant, contributing to its ambiance by doing much of the woodwork and renovations himself. Jim's pride in his family's hard work is evident as he recounts the transformation of the space from a produce store to a thriving restaurant. The Importance of Consistency Quality and Customer Experience Consistency is a key theme in Jim's philosophy. He emphasizes that a single bad experience can lead to negative word-of-mouth, especially in the age of social media. "One customer with a bad experience will tell 10 to 15 people," he warns, underscoring the need for quality service and food. Jim takes pride in the restaurant's offerings, particularly its wings and burgers, which he describes as fresh and well-prepared. He encourages customers to try different menu items, even if they have their favorites, as he believes everything on the menu is worth tasting. Employee Relations Jim also reflects on the value of treating employees with respect. He notes that he has had a loyal employee for over five years, attributing this to a positive work environment where respect is mutual. Jim recalls his early days in the business, where he learned from a good manager the importance of balancing criticism with praise. This approach, he believes, fosters a healthier workplace culture, akin to raising children—where positive reinforcement is more effective than negative feedback. Community Connections and Customer Loyalty A Beloved Local Establishment Jim's passion for the restaurant and its history shines through as he discusses the building's history and its significance in the community. Originally constructed in the late 1960s for a business called Griff's Burger, the structure has a nostalgic charm that resonates with the community. Jim shares that many customers have fond memories of the restaurant, and he has received feedback urging him not to change anything about the establishment. This sentiment reinforces his ...

Discovering Lake County: The Heart and Soul of Black Lung Brewing Company Welcome to another exciting episode of "Discovering Lake County," where we dive deep into the stories that make our community vibrant and unique. In this episode, we had the pleasure of sitting down with Josh, the passionate owner of Black Lung Brewing Company. From its intriguing name to its community-centric ethos, Black Lung Brewing is more than just a place to grab a beer—it's a local treasure. Let's explore the key takeaways from our conversation with Josh and uncover the essence of this beloved brewery. The Origins of Black Lung Brewing Company A Name with a Story The name "Black Lung Brewing Company" isn't just catchy; it carries a deep personal significance. Josh shared that the name was inspired by his grandfather, who survived a mining accident in Kentucky after World War II. This harrowing experience led his grandfather to move to Illinois for a safer career. The name "Black Lung" was suggested by Josh's wife after hearing Joe Bonamassa's song "Black Lung Heartache," tying the brewery's identity to a poignant family story. From Distribution to Taproom Black Lung Brewing started as a distribution-only business in Waukegan. Josh was hands-on, delivering beer to various accounts. One day, while driving through Round Lake Beach, he noticed a building for lease on Route 83. With a personal history in the area, he approached the local mayor and administration about opening a brewery. Their enthusiasm, coupled with the building owner's support, led to the establishment of Black Lung Brewing's first taproom. Opening During the Pandemic Challenges and Resilience Opening a brewery during the pandemic in 2020 was no small feat. Josh used the downtime to meticulously plan and prepare for the eventual reopening. Despite the initial dip in sales due to increased competition in the distribution market, he focused on creating a welcoming taproom. When indoor gatherings were permitted, Black Lung Brewing opened its doors with limited capacity and reservation-only seating, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for patrons. The Brewery's Ambiance and Local Art A Fusion of Music and Art The decor of Black Lung Brewing is a testament to Josh's love for music and art. The brewery showcases local artists' work, initially featuring monthly takeovers of a designated wall space. This initiative evolved into a partnership with the Grayslake Arts Alliance, which now manages the art displays. A standout feature is a stunning mural by artist Holly Rogalski, depicting the brewing process in a vibrant, blacklight-reactive style. This mural not only enhances the brewery's aesthetic but also serves as an educational piece for visitors. Musical Homage Reflecting Josh's passion for music, the brewery's brewing tanks are named after iconic guitarists like Randy Rhoads, Dimebag Darrell, and Tom Morello. This unique touch intertwines the themes of music and brewing, creating a distinctive atmosphere that resonates with patrons. Community Engagement and Events A Hub of Activity Black Lung Brewing is a bustling hub of community engagement. The brewery hosts a variety of events, including: Trivia Nights**: Held on Wednesdays, hosted by one of Josh's partners. Open Mic Sessions**: Thursdays are reserved for local talent to showcase their skills. Live Music Performances**: Fridays feature live music, adding to the vibrant atmosphere. Vinyl Record Listening Sessions**: Sundays offer a relaxed ambiance with vinyl records playing in the background. Unique Offerings One of the brewery's unique events is the Bluegrass Open Jam, held on the first Sunday of each month. Musicians gather in a circle to play bluegrass music, creating a lively and inclusive environment. During the summer, this event moves outdoors, allowing for a vibrant community gathering. Expansion to Fox Lake New Horizons The decision to open a second location in Fox Lake was driven by the desire to bring craft beer to a new audience. The waterfront location on Lake Nippersink offers boat access and outdoor concerts, enhancing the overall experience for patrons. Despite some challenges with the building's age and maintenance issues, the Fox Lake taproom has quickly become a popular destination. Balancing Business and Family Life Family Support Running a brewery while balancing family life is no easy task. Josh, a father of four, acknowledges the crucial role his wife plays in managing household responsibilities, allowing him to focus on the brewery. His children also contribute by helping with chores and responsibilities around the house, making it a true family affair. The Mug Legion Fostering Community The "Mug Legion" is a membership program that allows patrons to have their own personalized mugs stored at the brewery. • STU "The Piano Guy" - Michael Stoinski
    2025/02/27

Michael “Stu” Stoinski was born and raised in the Northern Chicago Suburbs and found his love for music at a very young age. As a child he would spend countless hours listening to music from his library of records & would hide his Fisher Price Tape Recorder under his pillow and listen to cassettes while falling asleep. The piano stole his heart at the age of 8 when he attended a musical where the production had a clear, see-through piano on stage. He begged his parents for lessons & would pretend to play the piano along with TV theme songs, using gloves laid on the floor as his imaginary keyboard. His parents finally started him on lessons the age of 9 and got a rent-to-own piano. He still has that same piano today. His lessons began with a classical music teacher named Georgia Cobb. She gave Stu his piano groundwork, but she was strict with her music style and refused to teach other than classical. Stu’s next teacher, Eric Sutz, taught him how to play songs he really enjoyed with more freedom. Stu took these more “free-style” lessons six years and truly credits Eric for creating the foundation for the musician he is today. Stu started playing in a garage band, went on to perform solo, & was an original member in the Wisconsin band, “Bella Cain”. He is most commonly a “one-man-show” but does occasionally play with a drummer or as a trio. Stu regularly plays at countless bars and restaurants, entertains for weddings, birthdays, anniversaries and numerous other special events. He is known for his fun attitude, free-style playing and high energy. Of his many accomplishments Stu is most proud of his original music, he has funded and recorded two albums with a third hopefully in the future. Stu currently offers a large array of services, including but not limited to weddings, special events, composing and more! He plays mainly in-between Milwaukee and Chicago but has enjoyed traveling to further distances for events as well!
