The story was narrated to the Pandavs by a Brahmin who visited their host in Ekchakra. After losing half his kingdom to Guru Dron, Drupad was extremely disturbed. He felt that none of his sons and relatives were capable and talented. Drupad wanted a son who could defeat Guru Dron. He also wanted a daughter who would be suitable to become queen of Arjun. Drupad convinced Rushi Yaaj to do a yagya for getting such a son and a daughter. Krishnaa and her brother emerged out of fire. The visiting Brahmin also told the Paandavs that a swayamvar of Draupadee had been planned by King Drupad. Maharshi Ved Vyas also visited the Paandavs and instructed them to proceed to Panchaal-nagree where the swayamvar was going to take place. He also narrated the story of earlier life of Draupadee and how she had been blessed to have five husbands. (Mahabharat/Aadiparv/Chaitrrath Parv/Chapters 164, 165, 166, 167 and 168).
