  • Ana Kresina - Kids Ain't Cheap
    2024/01/27

Parenthood is an adventure filled with joy, challenges, and a significant amount of financial planning. In the latest episode I'm joined by Ana Kresina, a financial educator and co-host of the Get Rich Slow Club podcast, to explore the intricacies of managing money as a parent. Ana's journey to financial independence and her experience as a parent have culminated in her book, Kids Ain't Cheap, a comprehensive guide for parents navigating the costs of raising a child. The episode delves into topics ranging from the price of early childhood education to the gender super gap, and the importance of planning for your child's future.

  • Molly Benjamin - Ladies Finance Club | A safe space where women can talk about money
    2022/09/01

Molly Benjamin was not very good with money despite working in the financial sectors for national and international companies for most of her career. In fact, over a glass of prosecco with her gal pals she realised they were all a bit #clueless when it came to their personal finances. As an experiment, Molly put on an info-night in her living room. Thus was born Ladies Finance Club:

"Women make really good investors when we know how, because we have our goals and we stick to them. You know, I think it's like the University of Warwick, they've all done these studies, which show women make really good investors and they can actually outperform men. But the difference I see is, and I say this across Australia and the UK as well is women like to have cash, they like the safety of cash. They like to know that it's there, if an emergency happens and you know, when women you've got a family, you've got kids, you've got expenses, I can understand why they like to have that buffer."

  • Robin Bowerman - Vanguard | Where index funds were born
    2022/08/18

Joining us for this episode is Robin Bowerman Head of Corporate Affairs at Vanguard Investments Australia. We spoke about the creation of index funds by Jack Bogle the founder of Vanguard, asset allocation, some of the psychological traps of investing for the first time, and how cost matters when you invest.

"The one thing you know, for certain is what the cost will be. So it's more about what can you control and what do you have to accept that you cannot control You can't control markets, you can control cost and the less you pay the less the drag on the performance of the fund on the portfolio going forward. That's part of the reason why ETFs, I think have become successful both in the US, but also in Australia over the last 10 years is because they've been able to put tools in the hands of investors at a relatively low price."

  • Natasha Etschmann - Tash Invests | On being young and building wealth
    2022/08/04

Guest today is Natasha Etschmann, better known as Tashinvests. Tash is a 24 year old with a net worth of 215 K. She works as a disability support worker and is living proof that you don't have to work in finance to be good with money.

"I feel like we all overthink this so much. Investing is a lot simpler when you kind of strap it down. Just starting really small, like finding that one, ETF, opening a brokerage account. I think we can all sit here and overthink everything that we do all the time, especially for stuff like this."

  • Dave Gow - Strong Money Australia | ETFs Keeping it Simple
    2022/07/21

We welcome Dave Gow from Strong Money Australia to this episode. Strong Money Australia focuses on helping people reach Financial Independence and Retire Early (FIRE) in Australia. Dave publishes regular articles and podcasts, sharing his thoughts and the key lessons that have helped him on his journey. You can find out more at: https://strongmoneyaustralia.com/

"I like the fact that I can get a decent income stream every quarter, every year, but when I'm looking at investments, I am kind of considering the bigger picture, like the bigger portfolio in mind first and foremost, rather than just chasing the highest yield from here there and everywhere. So I'm more interested in like a pretty diversified portfolio, but hopefully one that produces like a decent income at the same time. So it's kind of a balance and I definitely wouldn't chase super high yields just because it looks more attractive or it's more kind of immediate gratification of getting the high payments each quarter."

  • Angela Thompson - Sharesight | How do you track your investments?
    2022/07/05

Angela Thompson is the senior digital marketing and affiliate marketing manager at Sharesight Portfolio Tracker. While she'd worked at Sharesight for a couple years and heard people talking about shares, investing, ETFs and micro investing, she hadn't taken the leap herself. It was through a colleague, also in marketing that she bought her first ETF. Angela really needed someone that she could identify with to help her take the plunge. Now she takes her investing seriously regularly funding her account and managing her own asset allocation.

"I think in the past, it's been seen as this massive barrier, that you have to understand everything about the market before you jump into it. But there's so many other things that we do. When you learn to cook, you don't know every single ingredient in every single recipe in the world, you just learn how to make one thing and then you make that well, and then you move on to the next thing and investing, I think can be like that. There's obviously those few baselines that you need to understand, but you don't have to understand derivatives and options. When you want to buy your first ETF, just start do your research. There's so much great content about it. Do a bit of research."

  • Jamie Hannah - VanEck | Gaming Esport and Clean Energy ETFs
    2022/06/21

Jamie Hannah is the Deputy Head of Investments and Capital Markets at VanEck Australia. He currently manages 28 Exchange Traded Funds (ETF’s) with more than $9 billion under management. We spoke about 2 VanEck thematic ETFs - Esports and Gaming (ASX:ESPO), and Clean Energy (ASX:CLNE). "There are over 3 billion gamers in the world, generating $180 billion in revenue. The movie industry globally only generated a $100 billion and the music industry around $40 to 50 billion." But he also warns that "Thematics should only be a small portion of anyone's portfolio. You may make some good money out of it, but it should never be the backbone of any long-term planning" because "Long-term wealth is all about long-term investment in good quality companies over a longer period of time."

Clean Energy ETF trades under the code CLNE, and Esports and Gaming is trading under the code ESPO. Find out more at: https://www.vaneck.com.au/
