  • EP18 - Angelica & Brooklyn
    2024/11/01

This week we meet Angelica Ponder and her dog Brooklyn, joining from Arizona. Angelica has a background in luxury hospitality, customer experience, and emotional intelligence (EQ). Before adopting Brooklyn, Angelica and her husband had prepared for pet ownership by creating a special ceramic treat jar, which they painted and fired in 2009, months before finding Brooklyn at an adoption event.

Brooklyn, who turned 16 in September, is an Australian Kelpie - a mix between a Border Collie and a dingo. Initially labelled as a mutt at the adoption center, Brooklyn's breed was later identified by a groomer. She displays typical Kelpie characteristics: highly task-driven, independent, strong-willed, and excellent at problem-solving. Unlike typical companion dogs, she's not particularly cuddly but gives Angelica "exactly what she needs."

One of Brooklyn's most remarkable displays of emotional intelligence was detecting Angelica's pregnancy before she knew herself, showing this by repeatedly placing her head on Angelica's belly. Brooklyn also proved to be an invaluable companion during Angelica's postpartum depression, providing constant presence and encouraging her to visit dog parks, which helped with recovery. Another notable trait is Brooklyn's seems to immediately seek forgiveness after being scolded, showing emotional awareness and humility.

We'll also learn more about the transformative power of pet ownership. Angelica, who didn't grow up with dogs and was initially distant from them, discovered a new type of love through Brooklyn. Her husband noted how this relationship had changed her, introducing her to both giving and receiving unconditional love from a pet. The impact extends to their daughter, who considers Brooklyn so much a part of the family that she used to tell her schoolmates she had a sister named Brooklyn.

    2024/10/18
Welcome to The Emotional Intelligence Pawdcast, where we explore the deep connections between humans and their canine companions. Today we have a very special episode that touches on both the joys and sorrows of dog ownership. Our guest is Michelle Ansell, a managing partner at Douglas Jackson and a passionate dog owner. Michelle shares her journey with three remarkable Italian hunting dogs known as Bracco Italiano. These intelligent and sometimes stubborn breeds have not only been her beloved pets but also her partners in competitive working dog trials. In this episode, we'll dive into:
    • The unique characteristics of the Bracco Italiano breed
    • Michelle's experiences in training and competing with her dogs
    • The deep bonds formed through working closely with intelligent canines
    • How dogs can teach us about nonverbal communication and emotional intelligence
Before you download and listen, I'd like to take a moment to share some sad news. Since our recording, Michelle's eldest dog, Digger, has sadly passed away. Digger was not just Michelle's first Bracco Italiano, but also the one who introduced her to the world of competitive dog trials. His legacy lives on through the skills and passion he inspired in Michelle and her younger dogs and we are grateful that Michelle still wanted the recording to be broadcast. Sending love.
