Wellness is not merely the absence of disease. It is not a passive state but rather a dynamic and conscious development of the whole self. Wellness is associated with intentions, choices, and actions leading toward an optimal state of well-being so that instead of surviving, you're thriving. Wellness is commonly viewed as having seven dimensions: mental, physical, social, financial, spiritual, environmental, and vocational. These dimensions are interdependent and influence each other. When one dimension of our well-being is out of balance, the other dimensions are affected.
Attention must be given to all the dimensions, as neglect of any one over time will adversely affect the others, and ultimately one’s health, well-being, and quality of life. They do not, however, have to be equally balanced. Each of us should aim, instead, to strive for a “personal harmony” that feels most authentic to us. Everyone naturally has their our own priorities, approaches, and aspirations, including our own views of what it means to live life fully.
