The coexistence of humans and wildlife has been a complex and evolving journey. Historically, humans and wildlife have coexisted for thousands of years, with various cultures around the world respecting and even revering certain animals as sacred. One of the biggest challenges in this journey has been balancing the needs and interests of humans and wildlife. The Environmental Outlook interviewed the community in Beladwar, a village in Odisha, who are working to protect the Asian openbill stork. Despite the bird's impact on their agricultural output, the community have come to regard the Asian openbill as part of their community and are working to ensure its conservation. Overall, the community's story is one of a deep connection to their environment and a commitment to its preservation, despite the challenges it poses.
