There are only a few months left before more than a dozen Catholic churches in the greater New Orleans area will close their doors or be absorbed into another parish. Last year, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New Orleans announced the 13 parishes that will be affected. The Archdiocese filed for bankruptcy protection in 2020 after more than 500 claims of sexual abuse by Archdiocesan clergy or staff. As it struggles with its own financial situation, the Archdiocese selected 13 parishes which have been diminishing in population to consolidate. Our Lady Star of the Sea parish in the St. Roch neighborhood of New Orleans is on the list. In this episode, I visit the parish and its members as they try to find ways to keep their individual church alive while trying keep their faith in the broader Catholic church.
