  • CAFP's Work on Justice Through Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (S02E08)

    In this episode, Dr. Assibey is joined by CAFP's Justice Through Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) Committee co-chairs, Drs. Shannon Connolly and Melissa Campos to discuss how and why the committee was formed, the work being done by this committee to focus CAFP's work with the JEDI lens.

    Guests:

    • Dr. Shannon Connolly, MD, FAAFP (she/her) is the Associate Medical Director at Planned Parenthood of Orange and San Bernardino Counties. Dr. Connolly offers Adult primary care with a focus on sexual and reproductive health, and gender-affirming care. She is Chair of CAFP’s JEDI Committee, as well as Past President of the CAFP Board. Dr. Connolly also serves on the AAFP Commission on DEI in Family Medicine. Dr. Connolly identifies as Asian American, and an immigrant to the US.

    • Melissa Campos, MD (she/her) identifies as Mexican-American. Dr. Campos is the Associate Program Director at Scripps Chula Vista Family Medicine Residency and a Physician for San Ysidro Health. She practices full spectrum family medicine, inpatient, OB, SNF, and clinic. Dr. Campos is Vice-Chair of the JEDI Committee, and Past-President of the San Diego Chapter of CAFP..

    • Rob Assibey, MD, FAAFP (he/him) identifies as Ghanaian American. Dr. Assibey is the Associate Program Director at San Joaquin General Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program. He practices full spectrum family medicine with an emphasis on street medicine, addiction medicine, SNF. Dr. Assibey is the District 8 Director on the CAFP Board, and a member of the JEDI Committee.

    At the California Academy of Family Physicians, we know that Addiction Medicine is Family Medicine. In our latest series 1 in 5, we bring you stories of doctors - and their patients - who have worked together to reduce the harm done by opioid use disorder (OUD). These brief stories will bring you into the hearts and minds of our guests. We hope that this will inspire you to do everything in your power to bring medical attention to the OUD patients in your practice.

    1 in 5 series: Addiction Treatment and The Power of Connection

    In this episode we speak with a family physician who shares practical tips about treating OUD, and also explains the power of connecting with our patients.

    Guests:

    Dr. Anusha Chandrakanthan, MD, FAAFP is a family practice physician who is board certified in Addiction Medicine. She works with the Valley Homeless Healthcare Program at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center providing services to a marginalized population. She is also a Clinical assistant professor at the dual diagnosis addiction medicine program with Stanford school of Medicine. Previously, she was the medical director of a telemedicine startup providing treatment for substance use disorders.

    Our interviewer, Dr. Tipu Khan, MD, FAAFP, FASAM is the Medical Director of the Ventura County Backpack Medicine Group, Primary Care Hepatitis C Eradication Project. He is also Chief of the Ventura County Addiction Medicine Specialty clinic and consultation service, with a speciality in SUD in pregnancy.

    1 in 5 Series: I Leaned In: One Family Doc’s Story of Treating Opioid Use Disorder

    In this episode we meet with a leader in family medicine. A practicing family doc and health system administrator who shares his journey toward treating OUD.

    Dr. Jay W. Lee, MD, MPH, FAAFP is a board-certified family physician who sees patients at KCS Health, a community health center serving patients who have immigrated or who have been impacted by the carceral system in Orange County, CA. He also serves as medical director at Integrated Health Partners, a clinically-integrated network serving 350,000 patients insured mostly by Medicaid whose medical home is at one of 9 community health centers in 3 counties.

    Dr. Lee co-founded the Family Medicine Revolution hashtag: #FMRevolution, a grassroots social media movement giving the power of telling family medicine’s story back to family physicians and building a global community of thought leaders.
