In this episode of Red Letters, Matt Woodfill is joined by Pastor Juan & Carmen Bustamante. Tune in as they discuss the Red Letters found in Luke 23:34 about forgiveness!
Born and raised in Houston, TX, Pastor Juan Bustamante was not raised in church and did not know about God’s unconditional love. Raised in a family of 7 siblings, he was headed toward becoming another statistic of the neighborhood he grew up in. He grew up in a home where drugs controlled the direction of his family’s decisions and because of this, he and his siblings were exposed to things that would prove difficult to overcome. As a teen lost and without purpose, he began to make gangs and street life his identity and in 1993 ended up in prison. It was there that Juan encountered Jesus and His forgiveness. He was saved and baptized but did not have someone to disciple him. When released in 1995 he reconciled with Carmen and his son who was 1 1/2 years old and did the best he knew how as a new Christian, husband, and father at 19 years old. It wasn’t until 1998 when his mother had an overdose and was rushed to LBJ hospital, that he and his family was in need of hope that they were led to Lakewood Church. It was there that the love of God was poured out in a supernatural way that changed His life forever! It was a Wednesday night service and the lady at the information booth heard their plea for hope and took them directly to the front where Mrs. Dodie Osteen embraced them and prayed the prayer of faith and healing over their mother, which at that very hour was made whole! Pastors Juan & Carmen spent 10 years under Lakewood church receiving and learning about God’s unconditional love. The word of God began to come alive in His heart. He found a home and a place to grow strong in with the Men’s ministry. In 2008, they were called out of Lakewood into churches in their community and served there until God called them to start City on a Hill Church on July 10, 2011.Today City on a Hill Church is thriving in the inner city of Houston, TX. God called Pastor Juan and Carmen to the neighborhoods where he grew up. To bring hope, healing, and restoration to those that are lost. City on a Hill is known by all that come as a place where love is the foundation and where His presence dwells. It’s a place where disciples are made, and sons and daughters find purpose and meaning once they get saved. A place where no matter what they have done that God’s Grace is sufficient to give them a new identity and new life. Thus, God has given our vision statement. “Loving people where they are and helping them become the person they were created to be”.
