  • Radio 43 | Episode 52 | Intelligence Report | Pessimism, Decline and a Rising Radical Right
    2024/03/14

HOPE not hate has today released its annual State of Hate report, titled ‘Pessimism, Decline and a Rising Radical Right’.

It is *the* go-to place for analysis of the far right, growing trends, fresh investigations and up-to-date profiles of all the key figures and groups. There’s nothing else out there like it.

On this episode of the podcast, Nick and Joe go over the broad takeaways from the report before having an in depth discussion on the topic of the growing Radical Right influence in the Conservative Party. This is an important story which reflects the growing toxicity in mainstream politics. The pair talk about where this group has come from, what it exists to achieve and how big an influence it, and its associated media environment, has on our politics.

To close, they touch on two other stories, the first is a new investigation into a member of the Patriotic Alternative splinter group, The Homeland Party, who is Chair of a Community Council near Dundee. The other is a disturbing article into the extremism of a far-right commentator named Steve Laws.

Both blogs are linked in the comments, and should be approached with caution.

    Cheers,
    X

    • A quick-fire round-up of news from across the far-right this year

HOPE not hate’s 2024 edition of our State of Hate report comes out in a few weeks and we have been absolutely slammed with that, so big apologies for not getting an episode out sooner this year.

  • The Dublin riots & the far-right in Ireland: how did we get here? - w/ historian and author, Pádraig Óg Ó Ruairc
    2023/12/05

On Thursday 23rd November, a 49-year-old Irish citizen, originally from Algeria but who had lived in Ireland for 20 years, committed a heinous knife attack on children at a primary school in Parnell Square East in Dublin.

Quickly, far-right and anti-migrant activists and agitators turned to social media, spreading a range of misinformation about the attack, including that the perpetrator was an illegal immigrant.

Within hours Dublin was ablaze, as rioters set police cars, buses and a tram alight and looted shops, causing over an estimated €10 million of damage.

But how did this happen? Is the Irish far-right larger and stronger than previously thought? And how do antifascists and Irish society more broadly respond to such a violent outburst?

To discuss this, and events in Dublin in more detail, we welcome the historian and author, Pádraig Óg Ó Ruairc, onto the podcast.

N.B. - During the course of the podcast, "The Diggers" are mentioned at one point. This ought to have been "The Levellers".

Pádraig has written several books on the Irish Civil War.

    - Several are available through Mercier Press.
    - Pádraig’s forthcoming book on political violence in Ireland (published Feb 2024) will be available through Merrion Press.

  • Radio 43 | Episode 50 | Intelligence Report | The far right remembers Britain's war dead the only way it knows how
    2023/11/13

On Armistice Day, 2000 far right activists and football hooligans descended on London under the guise of "defending" the Cenotaph from pro-Palestine demonstrators.

10 days ago, Britain's hooligan chat groups were filled with the usual discussion of football and beer. But they quickly mobilised as the (now former) Home Secretary Braverman branded pro-Palestine demonstrations as "hate marches", and as the The Daily Mail and Douglas Murray suggested the Cenotaph was under threat. All this coupled with Tommy Robinson's return to X, and his calls for a new anti-Islam far right street movement.

The result: chaos on the streets of London, as far right activists and football hooligans battled police and attempted to confront Pro-Palestine demonstrators.

HOPE not hate had teams on the ground and embedded within the far right all day, feeding live information about what exactly was going on and where.

HOPE not hate's CEO, Nick Lowles, makes an appearance on Radio 43 to give us the full run-through of the precursors to the carnage, how the itself day panned out, and what the backlash has been for those on the march and for Tommy Robinson himself.

With over 100 arrests already and presumably many more to come as police trawl through footage, it's looking as though Saturday will go down as another costly moment for Britain's far right.

  • Radio 43 | Episode 49 | Intelligence Report | Is Tommy Robinson returning to the streets?
    2023/11/07

On this episode, Nick and Joe discuss what is a very fast-moving situation.

The far-right are mobilising in London this weekend in opposition to a demonstration calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.

Near the centre of this is Tommy Robinson, who was allowed back onto X (Twitter) on Monday, and who has mentioned repeatedly that he’s wanted to get the English Defence League (EDL) back together.

Home Secretary Braverman’s recent comments calling pro-Palestine demonstrations “hate marches” have contributed to firing up an already hostile, and increasingly energised, mass of the former far-right street movement.

Along with worrying rumblings from the underground, the literal Nazis in the National Front look set to make their Remembrance Day march to the Cenotaph as usual, whilst somehow avoiding being labelled a “hate march” by our Home Secretary…

It’s a muddied picture, but Joe helps us to get to grips with what we should expect to see.

    Thanks for listening

P.s. Apologies for the background chainsaw noise towards the start and the end of the podcast - please do bear with us, it does go away after a short while.

  • Radio 43 | Episode 48 | Intelligence Report | (Susan) Hall of Shame
    2023/09/13

In some breaking news, HOPE not hate researchers have unearthed the deeply alarming views of the Conservative candidate for London Mayor, Susan Hall. Hall has liked posts endorsing Enoch Powell, Islamophobic tropes about Sadiq Khan, supported the myth that the 2020 American election was stolen from Donald Trump and expressed a disdain for the press and democracy.

But what ought to happen now?

On this episode of Radio 43, Nick and Georgie sit down to discuss the ins and outs of the shocking Susan Hall revelations, what the party needs to do now and how this case sits within the broader context of concerning Conservative Party incidents.

HOPE not hate has been banging the drum about the scale of anti-Muslim views within the Conservatives for many years, and Hall’s candidacy suggests that little is being done to make sure that those in the party with deeply worrying views are rooted out.

As part of this campaign, we have written to the Chair of the Conservative party, Greg Hands, presenting a dossier of evidence and stating that the party must suspend Hall and undertake a full investigation into her.

Help make this happen by signing our open letter.

  • Radio 43 | Episode 47 | Intelligence Report | Sending the fash packing, one town at a time
    2023/08/09

The episodes are coming thick and fast at the moment, and here we are back again with another Radio 43.

On Monday, the first asylum seekers arrived at the Bibby Stockholm barge in Dorset. The plan has gone ahead despite the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) condemning the boat as a “potential deathtrap” due to serious fire safety concerns. Across the country, tensions are rising as the Government continues to place asylum seekers in hotels, barges and barracks, and the far right try to use it to their advantage

On the show this week (which is something of a follow-up to last week), HOPE not hate’s Anki Deo and Misbah Malik make their debuts, talking Nick through the last few months of community responses to far right, anti-migrant demonstrations.

In doing so, they share lessons that we can take away about how communities have come together in various ways to see off the far right threat, and they let our listeners know about the ways in which HOPE not hate can help them respond effectively.

Big thank you to Misbah and Anki for coming on the podcast.

And thanks to you for listening!

P.S. This episode was recorded before Lee Anderson MP’s vile comments, which we otherwise would have discussed.
