American Voices’ founder, John Ferguson, first met Elham Fanoos and Milad Yousif during a teaching stint at the Afghanistan National Institute of Music, aka ANIM, in Kabul in 2011. They both come from an extended family of artists and musicians, and were already displaying great talent and drive when John taught them as Tweens in Kabul.

Many of the rest of the Fanoos family have been airlifted to the US since this podcast was recorded and with the help of AV have formed a the program will perform on July 30, 2022 at Lincoln Center’s GlobalFEST and then hit the road covering venues from New Jersey and Connecticut to Minnisota, Michigan and Chicago’s famous Old Town Folk Music School.
This conversation is an intimate view into the lives of uprooted musicians and hopefully a new beginning for a family that deserves to have their story told as well as an overview of American Voices’ groundbreaking performances and collaborations in Kabul, Mazar-i-Sharif and Herat from 2006-2011.
