Help! My Partner's Drinking Is Impacting Our Relationship

  • サマリー

  • The most challenging thing that Leslie and I ever faced in our marriage was my drinking. It began as casual nights out with friends that continued even as we became parents and had little ones that we were responsible for. I would still want to go out and have fun with my friends when I could, and even though I always promised that I would only "have a few" and be fine the next morning, that usually wasn't the case. This went on for years and began to drive a wedge in between us that would have never been resolved if I hadn't decided to stop drinking back in April of last year. But how did we finally get to where we are at now? Well, it sure wasn't easy! We know there are other couples out there that are experiencing exactly what we went through. Your partner may not have Alcohol Use Disorder or even drink all the time, but if it's causing issues in your relationship then it is a problem. But how do you navigate through it? How do you communicate your feelings about their drinking without them getting defensive? Or maybe you're the partner who is drinking too much and you think your partner is overreacting or you feel attacked when they bring it up. You may feel like they don't understand your reasons for drinking and you become upset that they keep bringing it up. This is the situation Leslie and I found ourselves in and we wanted to share our experience and let couples know they are not alone. We don't have all the answers, we didn't do everything "right", but we were able to overcome alcohol ruining our relationship and came out the other side stronger than ever! It took both of us working on our own individual healing and personal growth and then applying that to our relationship. It was a long journey and it came with a lot of emotions, tough conversations, and tears shed, but man was it worth it.
