How a woman's quest for financial freedom lead to a budding career

  • サマリー

  • In this episode of Financial Freestyle with Ross Mac, personal finance educator, author, and podcaster Jamila Souffrant joins the show to share her experience in the corporate workforce, her financial "aha" moment, and her journey to entrepreneurship. Jamaican-born Jamila Souffrant followed what she thought was the American dream: attending school, graduating, and starting her corporate career. But something felt off. “I realized very early in my career that I wasn't happy with a nine-to-five [job] or having a long commute,” says Souffrant. “I didn't want to be a slave to the commute or to an office, which prompted me to look into personal finance.” Her curiosity led her to the FIRE (Financial Independence Retire Early) movement. Souffrant dove into “priming” her commutes by consuming financial podcasts and reading articles when she could. She soon embraced the FIRE movement, managing to save $169,000 in just two years with her husband, while documenting the experience on her blog, Journey to Launch. “I really didn't start Journey to Launch with the idea that it would one day be my vehicle to ride out while I'm on the journey still to financial independence. But… there was a voice missing,” Souffrant explained. She created a blog, “Journey to Launch,” document her quest for financial independence. “And that's when I decided, let me start sharing my journey in a blog first and then realized the podcast was a better format for me… I just slow started to share my ideas, share my journey, what I was doing and that to started to catch a hold.” For those pursuing financial freedom, Souffrant advises, “It really takes being honest with yourself about what's important to you and what you're willing to give up permanently or just in the meantime until you get to your goals.” Financial Freestyle with Ross Mac on Yahoo Finance is dedicated to promoting economic prosperity for all.
