From political debates over inclusive education and systemic racism to controversies around corporate DEI programs being scaled back or cut entirely, there's a growing tension between those who want progress and those who push back against it. But beyond the headlines are real people; leaders, advocates and bridge builders who are doing the deep, often uncomfortable work of creating lasting change. And one of those leaders is our guest today, Cam Stewart. Cam is a recognized authority in diversity, inclusion and human rights, with over 25 years of experience spanning law enforcement, public service, and grassroots advocacy. His work has earned him numerous accolades, including the YMCA Peace Medal, the Queen's Platinum Jubilee Medal, and a Blackfoot name, Mikotsapinukum, meaning Red morning, an honor given for his contributions to indigenous equity and reconciliation. He's the president of Kanata Intercultural, Board President of StopHateAB and chair of the Rotary District 5360 Indigenous Relations Committee. And in April of this year, he became the bestselling author of his powerful new book, "Live to Die: A Journey in Diversity, Inclusion and Equity," which unpacks not only what DEI truly means, but also what it takes to lead with heart, courage and integrity. Cam's mission is simple but profound to spark brave conversations and help leaders use their privilege and power for positive change.
On this episode of American Real, Roger asks Cam about how he flips the script based on his own experiences. "I've been living it," Cam says. "And I guess that's, as [a] straight white male, person who's kind of found my way, and fell into this work as serving as a policeman. I kind of fell into the work. And it found me more than I found it... and it kind of called me to said, you know, I need to learn more."
