Meet Dr. Luis Martinez-Fernandez, a professor of history who experienced life events that demonstrated the fragility of democracy itself, and who now is committed to protecting it.

Dr. Martinez-Fernandez was born in Cuba and two years later, his family migrated to Miami as a consequence of the Cuban Revolution. They moved to Lima, Peru afterward, only to flee another anti-democratic event, which led them to move to Puerto Rico, where he completed his Bachelors and Master degrees in History. Years later, he embarked in yet another migration, this time by choice, to North Carolina, to pursue his PhD in History at Duke University, and he has been living in the continental U.S. ever since.

Dr. Luis Martinez-Fernandez became a historian because he wanted to understand his life story, and this led him to specialize in the History of Latin America and the Caribbean. We talked about the various events that we have experienced, as citizens of Venezuela, and Cuba, and about the political trauma that we and our families have experienced throughout our lives, and how that trauma sometimes gets in the way of understanding the political situation in the U.S. for what it is, without adding extra color from our experiences.

We also discussed the recent global events that, once again, indicate that democracy is fragile and in need of protection, and we talked about the role that latinx like you and me, play in helping protect it. It boils down to practicing civil engagement, and stepping into the power, and the responsibility that comes with being the largest minority group in the U.S. and fastest growing one.

Meet Francisco Ramos, a comedian and actor whose previous career in finance allowed him to upend his life and pursue his dream of becoming a comedian.

Francisco grew up in Venezuela, and moved to the U.S. with his family when he was 12. He learned English by himself, and always yearned to belong to his new environment. He graduated with a double degree in Finance and International Business from the University of Maryland, and after a couple of years he realized that was not the path he wanted to follow in life.

After some introspection, he discovered doing comedy was his passion, and decided to “go for it”.

Francisco talks about how his career in finance enabled him to pursue his dreams, and speaks candidly about what it takes to become a comedian.

Meet Dr. Jose Luis Torres, a writer and Professor Emeritus of English at SUNY Plattsburgh, who explains how studying humanities can also lead to stable careers.

Dr. Torres… also known by his pen name J.L. Torres, is a Puerto Rican author and scholar born in Puerto Rico and raised in New York. He tells us his life story, beginning with his experience growing up in the South Bronx, then moving to Puerto Rico as a young adult, and returning to the continental U.S. to pursue his career as a college professor.

J.L. Torres helped us dismantle the myth that those who study humanities will face an uncertain financial future, and shares facts about the multiple CEOs of Fortune 500 companies who studied degrees like English and Philosophy.

Given his vast experience teaching American and Latinx Literature and Creative Writing, as well as his formal education, we couldn’t pass on the opportunity to discuss the term LATINX, its purpose, and the strong reactions it provokes on many people.

We also discussed his recent book Migrations, his upcoming novel about the life of Puerto Rican icon Roberto Clemente, and how he chooses to discuss difficult topics in his literary works that the latinx community often prefers to avoid.

Meet Juliana Garaizar, an experienced investor whose career has evolved into one focused on supporting inventors from minority groups, including women.

Juliana has lived in multiple countries. She was born in Bilbao, Spain, and lived in France where she obtained an Erasmus scholarship to complete her last year of university studies. She also lived in Singapore while working for the Spanish Trade Commission, and now lives in Houston, Texas , where she serves as the head of Houston incubator Greentown Labs.

Juliana explains to us the funding gap in venture capital and some of the factors that help perpetuate the problem. She encourages us to cultivate our network, and to aim to diversify our sources of income, so that when our values don’t align with our jobs, we have an easier time doing something about it. Juliana also offered a different perspective about the imposter syndrome, and explains how microaggressions can put us down without us even recognizing them, leading to us losing confidence that can be mistaken as the imposter syndrome. Lastly, Juliana encourages us to learn more about investing, so that even if we don’t have large amounts of money, we can still support inventors looking to develop ideas that can solve problems experienced by women and minorities.
