In this episode of #LiknayanPodcast, we sit down with Dr. Alvie Astronomo, an esteemed nuclear physicist from the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute! She is the project leader and lead core designer of the recently commissioned Philippine Research Reactor 1 (PRR-1). Dr. Astronomo is also the lead designer of the Multi-shell Neutron Spectrometry System (MuNS), which has been deployed in medical accelerator facilities to assess neutron fields as reference for improving radiation protection measures. She is likewise actively involved in nuclear manpower development through nuclear training, education, and public awareness.

Dr. Reina is currently an Associate Professor at the National Institute of Physics in U.P. Diliman, where she leads the Data and Computation (D&C) Research Group, under the GANAP (Gravity, Astrophysics, Nuclear and Particle Physics) laboratory. The group pursues curiosity-driven and innovative research in the fields of data-driven astrophysics and computational physics, leveraging open data and open-source machine learning and artificial intelligence tools for a broad range of applications, including gravitational-wave astronomy, cosmology, and data for social good.

She is also the co-founder of the Pinoy Scientists platform and the host and resident scientist of “Science Says”, a science education TV series produced by the Knowledge Channel.
