  • Missionary to the Nations - Scott Wood
    2023/09/21

Do you remember the days when we sent missionaries to far away places with the Good News? We still do - but increasingly people from far away places are coming to our neighbourhoods. Sometimes they live next door. So how do we live as missionaries in our hometowns? Scott Wood has become a missionary to the nations without leaving home, and he is beginning to use DMM principles to engage our newcomers. Caution: This will rock your world!

  • DMM - Layton McCabe
    2023/09/14

Most pastors I know and most churches I encounter insist that the Great Commission mandate to make discipoles, Jesus followers) is their great concern. Yet, when we drill down on that we discover that not many are actually making disciples beyond their own walls, and even fewer even have a plan or strategy for making disciples who make disciples. In today's discussion with Layton McCabe, YWAM missionary, we examine the definition of t disciple making movement and some basic principles underlying disciple making movements.

Yet, in her college years she was drawn into an abusive relationship with a young man who said he was a Christian. In today’s episode Rebecca K. Tan tells her story of deception, abuse, deliverance and healing. So pull up a chair and sit with me for a bit as we explore issues around abusive relationships and how we ought to respond to those who are the victims and the perpetrators of abuse.

    Resources

Rebecca has written a wonderful book about her journey through and from abuse in a dating relationship. We highly recommend her book to you.

  • 009 - Joel Flores - Race and Justice 2
    2020/07/20

Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality. But how do we get from the starless midnight we seem to be in to bright daybreak where people of all ethnicities, all languages, all colours live together in respect, care and love for one another?

My guest today is a dear friend who represents a visible minority, a man with brown skin who has lived in both United States and Canada. He knows what racial discrimination looks like, but he is not a victim. So pull up a chair and sit with us as my good friend, Joel Flores and I talk about race issues and what we can do to lift the veil of darkness and step into a brighter day.

We are living in interesting times. A worldwide pandemic has claimed nearly a half million lives as we near the midpoint of 2020. Our American neighbours are preparing for an election that is arguable the most pivotal in the history of that nation, the outcome of which could have international implications for a generation or more, and there is growing unrest with the racial inequality that has plagued western civilization for nearly four centuries. Sadly, it is the Christian church that has been more than complicit in the racial injustice we are now needing to confront. At times Christian leaders have used - rather misused the Bible in attempting to justify racial injustice. Whether it is the slavery and mistreatment of those of African descent in America or our First Nations neighbours here in Canada, we who claim the Christian faith must get on the right side of this issue.

We thought it might be a good time to change gears for the next few episodes and have some honest discussion with those who have experienced the hellish brutality of racism and with those who have given their lives to change the culture. So let’s sit together for awhile and consider how we might better care for and serve our neighbour, whomever they are.

  • 007 Victor Somers Socialpreneur
    2020/06/08

There are some leaders who just seem to draw us out of our comfort zone and into a fresh new reality. Victor Somers is one of those guys. In 2011 Victor returned to New Brunswick Canada with a passion to make a difference in a community that had been devastated by military and industry closures. He had a dream of people's lives being transformed by the gospel, but did anyone want to hear?

Victor Somers is an entrepreneur. He starts things. He is always dreaming of what comes next. So he did the unimaginable. He purchased buildings. Run down buildings. Buildings that were emblematic of a better day in the past. Buildings that connected with the community's story. People came. They listened because Victor was leading a change in their town. And the many who have listened have responded - and are now part of a change story that is subtly sweeping over the east side of Miramichi.

This episode is Victor's story. By his own admission, some of what he does makes him uncomfortable, but that's what happens when you blaze a trail through a new frontier. You might disagree with some of what Victor does. My personal journey with Vic tells me that he is fine with your (or my) disagreement with him. I can promise you but one thing. If you will listen to his story, you will hear something that can change your life.
