They begin to distance themselves within the relationship from the falsely perceived source of failure by encouraging their partner to achieve their goals and taking space from the narcissist. The narcissist fully expects this move to produce the failure of their partner to succeed and come running back to them more fully under control. The narcissist actually believes the delusional reality that they themselves are both blameless and superior and will use the space/distance created from their partner to seek out new supply more deserving of the narcissist’s attention.
