    2024/11/15

Murderous Butcher Bichel - The Butcher and the Ripper
    News of the Times Episode 408 | 1808 & 1888
1888 London, and all of England is highly disturbed by the horrendous slashings taking place in Whitechapel which are both horrific and seemingly motiveless.
Investigative reporters, scientists and historians come out to see if a precedent can be found that may help explain the mind of the killer haunting the streets of Whitechapel.
From here, the story of Andreas Bichel comes to the forefront from 80 years before.
Quiet, married and unassuming, girls who vast Bichel have a habit of disappearing again and again.
Finally, with the last disappearance, the missing girl’s sisters notice that pieces of her clothing have been given to the tailors to be remade at the orders of Mr Bichel.
    Police are called in.
Articles of clothing are found, but no bodies of the multiple missing girls until one of the policemen notices that the dog seems both excited and disturbed around the wood pile.
This fascinating case was referred to again and again in the 1888 papers of the time. We take a look at the infamous Bichel case – the background, the crimes and the conclusion.

For those who like the odd, we have an additional case under our further particulars segment at the end of the episode. It takes place around the same time as the Bichel case. And like that case, it has a follow up some 80+ years later…

    Hosted by Robin Coles.

The Case of Sweet Fanny Adams - Famous Victorian Murder
News of the Times Episode 405 | 1867
In today’s episode, it is 1867 Alton, near Guildford. A crime so shocking and so brutal has taken place that it is still well remembered over 100 years later.
Three small children are playing together in a field when they are approached by a man who smells of alcohol. He offers to help them to pick berries. Then, he offers two of the children money to go away and offers money to 7 ½ year old Fanny to go with him. She refuses. He picks her up and takes her away anyway.
What is found several hours later is a brutality that is extreme by any standard. There are over 20 body parts found pieced together in a jigsaw fashion, disembowelment, and the eyes of her head had been gouged out and thrown in the river for the fish.
This famous crime permeated the country in a way that only the ripper would do some 20 years later. We take a look at the background, the capture and the conclusion.
For those who like the weird, do check out our further particulars segment involving a gruesome discovery that was walled up in a house from around 1807. The house had been occupied by a religious community.

    The Horrifying Hyde Park Murder
News of the Times Episode 404 | 1915
In today’s episode, we are in the heart of London in 1915.
Local resident, Alice Elizabeth Jarman, described as weak minded and suffering a walking impediment, is found brutally murdered and cruelly left in a ditch in Hyde Park. A terrible case, but sadly not a case that is distinguishably remarkable.
Until news is released that the horrific wounds she received were made with a bayonet. There is an army barracks quite close, and she had stated that she was seeing soldiers, but the 1915 bayonets issued do not match her wounds.
And then, a bayonet is found in the sewers that do match her wounds. The bayonet that is the potential murder weapon is dated 1888. Thoughts turn to possible Ripper victim, Martha Tabram…
We take a look at this sad case from the heart of London during World War 1.
For those who like the unusual, we have a similarly themed case under our further particulars segment at the end of the episode. A missing illegitimate young girl who does not get on with her family and the findings in the garden by the new tenant 20 years later…

    2024/11/01

The Campden Wonder - 17th Century Murder Mystery
    News of the Times Episode 401 | 1660 - 1662
We launch our start of “Notorious” November with this very famous case from 1660 under the restoration reign of Charles II. The case, named the Campden Wonder – something of a mystery – remained relevant for centuries – still being referenced in late Victorian records.
A highly respected steward is off to the neighbouring village to collect the rents from the tenants for the Lady whom he works for. He informs his family to expect him back around 5:00 that evening and to hold supper for him.
The family wait and wait for him, finally sending off one of their manservants to go and look for the missing steward. When the man servant also does not return, the 19 year old son is sent to try to trace the pair.
The neighbourhood is rife with rumour and questions arise as to the possible involvement of the aforementioned man servant. He initially denies guilt, but then, in an extraordinary account, he starts to point fingers and who he basically accuses of murder is shocking.
However, the story continues two years on when the purported murdered man, that three people have hung for murder, shows up out of the blue with his own incredible tale!
For those who like the unusual – in our further particulars segment we recount the story of a gentleman some 100 years later who spends the majority of his life attempting to avoid air.
    Hosted by Robin Coles.

The Demon Drummer of Cortachy Castle
News of the Times Episode 401 | 1844
In today’s episode it is 1844 and we are in Scotland at the family seat of the Ogilvie’s.
The story recounts the visit of Miss Dalrymple who, with other guests, has come to stay for a few days in the famed family halls.
Having settled in her room from her long carriage ride, and already dressed for dinner, she awaits the signal to inform her to come down to dinner. Musing by the fire, she hears the sound of drumming – a traditional Scottish tattoo. Looking outside, she is unable to discern any figure drumming in the gloom.
Believing this to be a country antiquated way of announcing dinner, she goes downstairs only to discover, from the reaction of others, just how wrong she was.
This true spooky take, foreboding the death of a family member, was well documented and very well known.
We take a look at this famous tales from 1844 - the Demon Drummer of Cortachy Castle - in today’s News of the Times Halloween Special.
