  • “Satan Keeps Bringing Up My Past”
    2024/10/01

You can mark it down. Satan will bring up your past sins, and he will keep on bringing them up. Perry’s so familiar with this and though it never gets easier to stand firm, he’s grateful he knows what to do when the fiery darts relentlessly pelt him.

Then, have you ever struggled to discern God’s timing? Shawna was challenged by Esther’s resolve to draw close to God and wait on Him.

Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me.” We are encouraged to come to him with the heart of a child. Lisa Anderson, Executive director of Grace’s Table shares a time that a child’s dirty feet were a palpable reminder that we can come to Jesus just as we are.

Then, some days are so hard you wonder if you’re going to make it. On those days especially we cling to the faithfulness of God, come what may.

Perry shares, “When I feel prompted to share the gospel and don’t, those are moments I think I’m ashamed of the gospel.” But Shawna has some great insight about how that might not be the case at all.

Last, when you step into God’s purposes you’re probably going to feel like you’re in way over your head. Danneh Gresh, author the tween bible study, Esther, Becoming a Girl of Purpose joins us. She says, “When you’re in over your head, Jesus has all the overwhelming under his feet!”

  • “How Can I Know I’m a Child of God?”
    2024/09/30

There are passages in the bible that warn us about assuming we’re a child of God, other passages seem to indicate that only God knows. How do we balance these super unsettling passages with the gospel that tells us we can know we are God’s children?

Bible scholar Jeremy Grinnell joins the team to answer tough bible questions. Jeremy has his PhD in Systematic Theology from Calvin Seminary and shares his amazing story of redemption in The Bellowing of Cain.

Dr. Jeremy also takes on the following questions: What is the difference between wisdom, understanding and knowledge? What's the difference between worldly wisdom and Godly wisdom?

In Nehemiah God commands the Israelite men to divorce their pagan wives. Why would God do this when he clearly commands against divorce?

And, Nehemiah was passionate about rebuilding the wall in Jerusalem and calling people back to the ways of God but at one point he pulled out people’s hair in anger of their rebellion. What’s up with that?

  • How Do I Forgive Myself?
    2024/09/27

More than anything Shawna wanted to be a great mom. That’s why she’s struggled with forgiving herself in her failings as a mother more than anything else. How do we forgive ourselves?

Diya was as wicked as they come and her wickedness made her extremely wealthy. Then she has a vision of herself in hell and it crushed her. It’s a conversation about how following Jesus is not a ticket to heaven but about life transformation.

Maybe you’ve grown up ending prayer with the words, “In Jesus name we pray. Amen.” What does it mean to pray “in Jesus’ name”?

Perry shares about a moment when he spoke to his bride in anger and wounded her heart. His sin made him sad. It’s a conversation about how the sadness God lets us feel for our sin is used by him to free us from committing the same sins over and over.

Forgiving someone who’s wronged us is shifting from “because of what you did, you owe me” to “even though you did what you did, you owe me nothing.” When God forgives us he goes so far beyond that. He forgives, cleanses, reconciles, and empowers us to forgive others!

  • Already Perfect, But Not Yet
    2024/09/24

We’ve already been made perfect through Christ’s one sacrifice, and at the same time we are being perfected. God counts us as fully forgiven and righteous and yet it takes a lifetime to become who God says we already are!

Do you ever feel overwhelmed by the gap between who you are today and being like Jesus? What if, for today, we chose to love others by listening well and being curious about their lives? In putting others first, we’re becoming a little more like Jesus.

Maybe you find it easy to believe that God is sovereign over the world but struggle to believe He’s working things out for good in your world. If God is sovereign that means He has a plan and placed you where He has you for such a time as this.

As a boy Perry longed to know he was secure in God’s forever family. But he just wasn’t sure. He thought he had to do something heroic to get it. He didn’t know he just needed to throw his trust onto Jesus. And a kid named Lenny helped him do just that.

And, Shawna shares how she learned the 1-word prayer that brought peace to her anxiety.

  • How Are Your Thoughts Limiting Your Life?
    2024/09/20

Are there lies you’re believing about yourself that are keeping you from stepping into all God has for you? Shawna remembers the first time she thought her life didn’t matter and how that one thought has influenced her. Perry and Shawna talk about how to take captive those poisonous thoughts.

Perry’s excited about the release of his new song “Crashed Into Grace (Acoustic Version).” He admits thinking that maybe this is the song that will put his music on the map. But then wonders, “If that happens, will that give me the deep fulfillment my heart longs for?

Then, Perry marvels that all of his worst sins were committed after he started following Jesus. How is that even possible??

Shawna was so sad to find out her daughter wasn’t available to meet with her over the phone like they do every week. She had been anticipating that time together. It made her wonder, “Is this how God feels about me? Does He look forward to our talks like I look forward to talking with my daughter?”

Perry admits, “All my life I’ve tried to get the verdict that I’m a good person by winning. But God has allowed me to lose so many times.” It’s a conversation about the beauty of losing.

  • “I Do Some of My Best Worrying When I First Wake Up
    2024/09/19

It’s reality for Perry. Like yesterday, within 90 seconds of waking up his worries went from trivial, “How am I gonna get my Starbucks app to work again?” To heavy, “I wonder if dad’s gonna be OK after his 2 ER visits.” And everything in between!

Steve Norman joins the team, and he, Perry, and Shawna kick off the podcast with a conversation about what to do with those trivial and overwhelming worries. Steve works with Winning at Home and is host of The New Norm podcast.

Then, Shawna admits she has perfected the art of holy procrastination. How do we focus on the task at hand and refuse to get sidetracked with distractions?

Then, Perry shares about a season of life when he went from lots of open doors doing the things that were giving him joy, to cleaning toilets. A conversation about when God “Shuts us in.”

And last, Shawna’s feeling a little overwhelmed at all the opportunities in front of her. She asks Steve, “How do you maximize your gifts and times within limits?”

  • “Don’t Even Think About It!” – Perry
    2024/09/18

Perry had just fouled Chris hard in a hoops game. Chris made a move toward him but Perry had the ball in his hands. That’s when he said to Chris, “Don’t even think about it.” It’s a conversation about all the ways we try to get the verdict that we’re a good person by our performance!

Shawna has a distinctive desire to protect herself, to be safe. Because of people who have hurt her she’s leaned to protect her heart. A few years ago she realized that she had transferred that hurt onto her relationship with God. She’s learning to trust Him more.

Shawna longs to follow so closely to Jesus that she’s covered in the dust that Jesus kicks up with his sandals. To be so close that everything of him gets baked into us. Yet we often wander from following close and become upside down with no way to right ourselves. What do we do then?

When Shawna was little she climbed up on her dad’s lap when he was sitting in his recliner. That was such a safe place where she knew she was always welcome. Whether our dad was the worst or the best we all long to be loved. God wants to reparent us – to love us the way we long to be loved.
