    Segment 1: music

More familiar artists, for the people my age who are still involved in music and in the industry today

    Artists like Bruno Mars

    Black eyed peas

as well as popular artists like Rihanna, who is performing in the upcoming super bowl,

Tame Impala, most people around my age have heard of them and know that the artist Kevin Parker is known for making ethereal songs that feel unreal as the genre is sort of indie/rock

Another popular artist that I'm a fan of, hes gained a lot of popularity in the last years, Mac DeMarco, known for writing beautiful songs about falling in and out of love and talking about women so beautifully in his music,

Him and Kevin Parker are both unique people with creative lifestyles

-As well as another popular band who formed mid 2000s

    - didn't receive so much popularity until 2010, Beach house, another relaxing indie band, their beautiful music represents love, hurt and more

-their Album Depression Cherry, is graceful and their song “Space Song” is extremely incredible and sad and almost fragile all in one,

-I highly recommend them for a relaxing evening,

    Segment 2: fashion https://wwd.com/fashion-nfews/fashion-scoops/2010s-fashion-trends-that-defined-decade-1203393941/

Most of this stuff will sound fairly familiar as many people still wear clothes and brands from these

    - Brands such as supreme and gucci went crazy with their logos,

-somehow it worked leading tons of people to show off this sort of style everywhere

-Athleisure or active wear was very popular, almost a way of showing off your lifestyle and how “healthy” you are

    - even for those who didn't work out, they just wanted to be a part of this athletic mania

-People would even elevate their outfits, like track pants with suits or blazers, becoming a casual look to see on the streets.

    - One thing many people have left behind in the early 2010s, the infamous skinny jeans

many people can pull it off,

it's sort of because a norm now where baggier or mom jeans are seen more than skinny jeans

    Segment 3: Art https://www.artsy.net/article/artsy-editorial-art-movements-2010s

-Again Street art is still incredibly popular and is still going strong

-But if there a main piece i'd like...

    Segment 1: music https://www.musicgrotto.com/2000s-musicians/

-2000s Britney Spears and Avril Lavigne

-both being quite different in their music in style but still gaining millions of fans over songs like “toxic” and “girlfriend”

    - Avril was significantly younger than Britney,

-she did really call out to teenagers and many people became huge fans, she was 17 when she debut her first song “complicated”

-Avril still sings sometimes today and is in great shape

-other genres like rap were still thriving and artist like eminem came into the spotlight and stole the show, now 50 he still has a great voice and did perform at last years superbowl

    Segment 2: fashion https://www.thecoolist.com/y2k-fashion/

-Recently for the past year or so “y2k” fashion has been extremely trendy and popular, but nobody does it better than actually in the year 2000

-It was filled with glam and shiny belts, low rise jeans, and many of these may sound familiar to you because they're still in many stores trying to relive y2k

-Britney Spears had a massive influence on these clothing trends and y2k fashion

-Movies like Mean girls, which was in 2004 also impacted fashion a lot considering the main characters always dressed up in high heels, short skirts and yoga pants

-this era was a time of trial and error, not all y2k trends coming back, and some should be left as history, such as jeans under dresses

    Segment 3: Art https://www.artnews.com/list/art-in-america/features/the-exhibitions-that-defined-the-2000s-1234578321/

-As art progresses, more genres and more ways of expressing seem possible, every decade as we go seems to not only be paper artwork anymore

-architecture and rooms are also art

-I mainly want to talk about exhibitions, more than pieces themselves,

-Psychedelia / Psychedelic art and exhibitions, transforming you and bringing you into another universe or state of mind

  • The 1990s
    2023/01/25
    Segment 1: music
    • Nirvana (debuted in 80s but didn’t really become iconic until the 90s)
    • Rest in peace to a music icon Kurt Cobain,
    • made a label in music history having more than 1B streams on their most known song “smells like teenage spirit”
    • The meaning behind the song is actually pretty interesting, Kurt has been mentioned as “smelling like teen spirit”
    •  was unaware that it was actually a brand of deodorant and continued to make it the name of the song not realizing which is pretty funny to me
    • Same with radiohead
    • their song Creep from the Pablo honey album has 1B plays on Spotify,
    • definitely a milestone for music,
    • lead singer, Thom Yorke isnt much of a fan of this song and doesn’t like singing it anymore, like that it doesn’t represent how he feels anymore since he’s gotten older

    Segment 2: fashion

-90s fashion is my favorite out of all of the decades, besides the 80s,

And this one show really seemed to define and have an influence on clothing in the 90s

-Will Smith did inspire tons of people watching the show to dress like him

    • Bomber Jackets, scrunchies, which I know youve all heard,
    • And tons of plaid, lots of companies and brands have been trying to bring back "90s vintage" and are becoming more common once again, even if they werent the same as before.
    • Especially the iconic flipped Jacket Will brings into the light, even making a clothing line called "Bel-Air Athletics" which is super creative and awesome
    • This streetstyle will always have a special place in my heart

    Segment 3: Art https://study.com/learn/lesson/1990s-art-drawings-art-style-artists.html

-It's still popular now and has definitely evolved, It's one of those things that honestly will never go away

Art and music are both connected, being that hip-hop music created this graffiti movement

-Another Graffiti artist Banksy, an incredible street artist, still alive now and continuing many breathtaking works, and has even had art exhibits

-He used to hide his identity and was afraid of being arrested or persecuted as Keith Haring and many other street artists had been. He is a true gift to the art world

Hopewell Valley Student Podcasting Network Segment 1: music

-Are you ready for me to take you on this journey of the 80s in processing the past? (Hopefully you get that)

I’ve been waiting for the 80s!!

-Both M’s Madonna and Micheal Jackson, Billie Jean is one of those songs that gets stuck in my head and never gets out, but most of all, MJ has all the talents, the dances moves, the looks and his voice is seriously out of the world, a game changer forever, we lost him too soon

-Speaking of Madonna though, she is still alive and well at 64 y/o, Material Girl is definitely one of those songs that never gets old

-Changed the game absolutely for the rest of the world

-Hit songs take on me, everybody wants to rule the world and we are one, beautiful songs that now wrap up all of the 80s memories

-If you weren’t walking around with a Walkman.. What were you doing??

-Having more personal music and mixtapes became a thing while not always blasting your tunes on a boombox across the streets

-Take on me music video is still one of the most creative and innovative things of this time, and also one of the most viewed videos on YouTube with over 1B views

-Since Christmas time is here, it's a shame not to mention one of many hit songs from Wham! Last Christmas, personally one of my top 5 Christmas songs, a bit sad but who doesn’t love a catchy Christmas song? Wham! Is definitely one of the bands that is still heard today a lot and I hope that continues./

    Segment 2: fashion https://www.80sfashion.org/

    Neon, neon neon neon

-Sweat bands and colorful patterns became the 80s trademark, what a nostalgic thing it is now

-Street fashion all the way, overalls and graphic tees now, punk fashion

-And obviously, jazzercise clothes, colorful leg warmers and lots of denim

get to -listen to that very soon!

died, I'm wondering when this will end.

    Segment 3: Art https://mymodernmet.com/what-is-memphis-design/

listened to my past episodes, well im switching it up, because we're talking about..

    -Memphis design!

-not necessarily portrait art but design and architecture, an Italian design group made these post-modern furniture and yes post- modern but it looked very futuristic and bright, as if you were living in a cartoon

    - cartoonish but very popular artist still now, Keith...

  • The 1960s
    2022/11/22

    Hopewell Valley Student Podcasting Network

Music: *Grateful Dead, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones etc. Debut in the 60s becoming dime of the most worldwide famous names/bands to ever exist

Explaining Grateful Dead song “Ripple”: The more relaxing song Ripple has many verses to it that can be interpreted to your listening, what I interpret from it personally, is how everyone has their path in life and having the joy of others around you can help but don’t always rely on those when the true person you are is yourself, not anyone else.

The band itself seems to promote peace and love through their music and shows that as a message to the audience or to listeners

Song “Breath in the air” by Pink Floyd: is one another interesting song, maybe more easy to decipher with the lyrics saying “Long you live and high you fly, Smiles you'll give and tears you'll cry, And all you touch and all you see Is all your life will ever be” In the end, it’s symbolizing pure life and how we should appreciate it.

    woodstock 60’s festival

A peace filled weekend and music turns out to be a remarkable event of the 60s, even if it was more or less a disaster, but through huge crowds, bad weather and poor conditions, there was no violence or outbursts, just peace and enjoyment

Fashion: https://www.centralcasting.com/how-create-authentic-60s-look/Appreciating clothing is just as important. Bell Bottoms, Tie Dye, corduroy pants, flower patches and fun designs. It kind of sounds like today's fashion trends, from “flared jeans” to patches on pants, this didn’t just appear out of the blue, practically everything is just an old trend being rekindled. More or less, this is around where the “hippies” era started, but it’s really in its golden days in the 70s, if you’re curious about that just hold on and that’ll be coming your way soon. Art: https://www.tate.org.uk/art/art-terms/p/pop-art

Too cool not to talk about.. Pop art! I'm sure you’ve heard of Andy Warhol, famous for his stand out colorful works of art, especially the Marilyn Monroe piece.

Pop art was very untraditional.. to traditional art. Yes, abstract was a thing., but pop art is on a different level, very unique but too much to process for some. Pop art is eye candy. Very mesmerizing and fun to look at. It was taking other works of art and combining it into your own, sort of like collaging, the start to what continues today.

    2022/11/14

You are listening to Processing the Past, the podcast with your host Isabella.

In this episode of Processing the Past we will discuss: 1950s, and what happened.

    Segment 1: Music https://www.thepeoplehistory.com/50smusic.html

-Jazz starts to decline in popularity

-Rock n Roll is the new “ thing” and is seen almost everywhere

-It dominated the 1950s/ Rock n roll did originate from Jazz and many African American artists

-Rock n Roll did resemble teenage rebellion and was really popular for that age range

    movies

-Elvis kind of popped out of nowhere but was an instant hit, especially for the ladies

, a black woman blues singer

-Buddy Holly & Jerry Lee Lewis famous Rock musicians

-Buddy Holly's name also featured in more recent band "Weezer" as a semi-ironic song using his name as the title as well as in the song

    Segment 2: Fashion

    https://www.fashionbeans.com/article/1950s-fashion-guide-men/

-A big celebratory end of World War II!!

due to this as well and was an adjustment from such a difficult time

-All types of jackets were pretty popular during this time as many artists like Elvis wore this style on stage

-The brand Dior did have many pieces that were very popular during this era, that highlighted elegance and extravagance

-There were dresses for daywear and nightwear which wasnt always a thing

-I like dior perfumes their bottles are epic and smell pretty good

-And now in certain times and places slacks were acceptable for women to wear, not like before when some were literally jailed for wearing slacks which I will never get. come a long way, and still have more to go but society has improved since the 50s.

    Segment 3: Art

    https://fashionhistory.fitnyc.edu/1950-1959/

-Each decade of art never failed to impress me

-There is one painting that pretty meaningful called “our land”

-Charles White the painter displays a black woman implied to be a slave holding a pitchfork,

    slavery

-Mind you, this was in the 50s, and as a black artist it could have been really difficult to display this without tons of hate...

  • Processing the Past 1940’s
    2022/11/01
Hopewell Valley Student Podcasting NetworkProcessing the Past 1940’s

*introduction/recap* Hey guys, it's your host Isabella BACK with another episode for you. Again a quick recap we talked about the 1930s last episode where we talked about artist Georgia O'keefe More about Jazz and Swing along with fashion trends during that time.

    Segment 1: Music
    • (still in spooky season) Getting right into it. During this time a tune still popular today, a Christmas song that goes way back, by Bing Crosby, featured in a classic christmas movie Home Alone, you might have guessed it but, White Christmas was released in 1942
    • Bing was in his 50s when he sang this song but he has a very smooth calming voice I could fall asleep to, his song already gets me stoked for the Holiday season coming up soon,
    • This one song sparked many other musicians and singers to do covers of it and even Micheal Buble' sang a cover of this song which gained a lot of popularity as well
    • Bing did sing other songs but seemed to mainly gain popularity from his Holiday tunes. Even famous artist David Bowie sang Little Drum Together but this was later in his career.
    • Jazz and Swing are still huge but youll see that in the upcoming decades that it will slowly become less popular as other genres arise

Segment 2:  Fashion https://www.marieclaire.co.uk/fashion/1940s-fashion-the-decade-captured-in-40-incredible-pictures-108160The 1940s was pretty darn stylish, just like the past decades but as time passes trends come and go and evolve into new fashion styles
    • Unfortunately, WW2 started in 1939 moving right on into the 40s
    • But because of the war some clothing did have a more sophisticated look feeling more serious or even military like it could have been considered
    • Kind of like the 20s clothing were more casual and comfortable, but maybe a little more casual than the 20s.
    • Shirtwaist Dresses were extremely popular and were buttoned up like a shirt but with a waist length skirt.
    • I did say Processing the past would be different than history class but maybe you learned about the Triangle Shirtwaist factory and the fire that occured, where yes, they made shirtwaist dresses.

    Segment 3:  Art https://www.theartstory.org/definition/american-art/
    • If youve been listening to my podcast the words Cubism and Surrealism have showed up more than once.. It's only going to get mentioned even more from here considering that those genres of art are still popular and used just as much as the 20s and 30s.
    • But Abstract Expressionism was an art movement that was established in the beginnings of 1940s by Jackson Pollock, another artist whose work Ive also attempted to replicate or have been inspired off of in the past.
    • Even though it looks like a toddler couldve made those art pieces just by splattering a bunch of different color paints on a Canvas it's more about showing off and expressing emotions and channeling them or displaying them for others to see and interpret, some can even feel the emotions through anothers painting.
    • I did not mention it last episode during the 1930s talk but "American Gothic" The painting of the farmers one holding the pitchfork, the artist being Grant Wood who also continued to make art during this era of Abstract Expressionism

Music Credits:   List the artist and song name
