  • 780 | Cuppa Joe | Women of the Restoration | Estella Wight
    2024/11/22

The Wight family has a long history of serving the church, and Estella Wight was no exception. A prolific author who got her start by submitting a story to Marietta Walker at a young age, and then going on to work for Herald Publishing for many years, Estella filled the minds and hearts of the children and youth of the church through articles, poetry, stories and books. In this latest episode in the “Women of the Restoration” series, Wendy Eaten explains how Estella’s contributions to the writings of the church through several publications and published works charmed young and old alike ... all the while proving the inestimable worth of women in shaping the Restoration in ways too often overlooked.

  • ES 125 | Extra Shot | Hospitality as Essential to Mission
    2024/11/19

“Hospitality is not a missionary tool. It is not a tactic to get people to come to church. It is not something we do once in a while as part of our social or religious obligation, Christ-centered hospitality is a way of life that responds to the God who invites, welcomes and nurtures us,” says Senior President of Seventy and host, Karin Peter. In this Extra Shot episode, you’ll have the opportunity to listen in to Karin’s thoughts on why Christ-centered hospitality is so essential to mission and to living out our call as disciples. Watch for other Extra Shot episodes in which members of the Council of Presidents of Seventy give specific attention to hospitality in different contexts. Trust us, this is great information for every disciple.

“And the walls came a tumblin’ down.” Actually, by the time the Gospel of Mark was written they probably already had. But, imagine sitting outside the Community of Christ Temple in Independence, and having Jesus tell you that it would all be coming down. Scary? Upsetting? Maddening? Perhaps all of the above. Bad stuff happens all the time, but in the midst of it, we have the assurance that we are not alone... and we ought to focus our attention on the hope that is resident within us because of our relationship with Christ. We are not alone, and we will make it through the tough times.

  • ES 124 | Hospitality as a Political Act | Joelle Wight
    2024/11/12

Let’s be clear, separation of church and state does not mean that disciples of Jesus Christ should avoid being politically active! Jesus was political. How could he not be, if he hoped to bring about the reign of God on earth? Left unchecked, politics can threaten the things we hold dear ... the worth of all persons, the sacredness of creation, unity and diversity ... you get the idea! In this extra shot episode, Joelle Wight shares her passion for political engagement and how engaging politically, in light of the Gospel, can be an act of hospitality. “If, [at any point], you feel like getting up and throwing up your hands and walking away... Joelle would encourage you to ask one more question, turn to wonder and see where it leads.

Mark’s telling of the story we have come to know as “The Widow’s Mite” is a story about faithful generosity... or is it? Maybe it’s really about Jesus pointing out economic injustices. Giving one’s “spare change” means different things to the wealthy and the poor. And, in this case, the widow may have been the very source of the other’s abundance. Listen in as co-hosts Karin and Blake, sit across from the treasury with Jesus and ask some tough questions. In the end, they’ll let you decide what’s at stake.
