  • Redlining from our eyes
    2024/09/23
The practice of "redlining," in which financial institutions discriminated against people living in areas with a high concentration of Black or minority residents, started in the 1930s and persisted till today. The word "redlining" comes from the Home Owners' Loan Corporation's (HOLC) use of color-coding to designate minority neighborhoods as "high risk" investment locations. There are large racial gaps in housing, education, and economic opportunities because this strategy deliberately prevented Black families from becoming wealthy through homeownership. The Fair Housing Act of 1968 made redlining illegal, but the practice is still observable in segregated neighborhoods and the racial wealth disparity. In this episode of Rebel Nation Podcast, we'll take a look at how redlining affected urban America and how people are still fighting to erase its history so that everyone may live in a fairer society.
