  • "Sounds in the Sea" Michael Stocker (Ocean Conservation Research) The Impact of Sound on Marine Life
    2024/09/15

    Send us a text

In this episode we talk with Michael Stocker about the impact sounds in our oceans have on all marine life (including low to mid-frequency sonar, shipping traffic, and blasting). Michael is founding director of Ocean Conservation Research (Sound Science Serving the Sea), where he uses his fluency in bio-acoustics to explore the impacts of noise on ocean animals to inform ocean policy and practice toward decreasing human bio-acoustic impacts on marine habitats.

Ocean Conservation Research is focused on understanding the energy and noise impacts of the industrialization of the ocean, and its consequences on marine life. They engage in marine biological and technological research based on conservation priorities. They use the products of this research to inform the policies and practice of the public, industry, and lawmakers so that we may all become stewards of the sea.

Michael is an acoustician and naturalist by trade and a musician by avocation, he has written and spoken about marine bio-acoustics and the impacts ocean noise pollution on marine life since 1992, presenting in national and regional hearings, National/Int’l TV, radio and news publications, as well as museums, schools, and universities. His understanding of both physics and biology has proven invaluable in court testimony and legal briefs, defending the environment against the dangers of human generated noise in the sea.

Michael has been a panelist and presenter at various professional, trade, and technical conferences, presenting on bio-acoustics and technology.
He has advised and designed environments and technical online systems for a diverse array of clients including the U.S. National Holocaust Museum in Washington D.C., George Lucas’ “Skywalker Ranch,” and various premier Hollywood sound and film studios.

And as a member of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) bio-acoustics committee, and an ANSI delegate to the International Standards Organization (ISO) committee on Underwater Acoustics, Michael has been developing more accurate methods of assessing and expressing the dimensions of the marine acoustic environment and the impacts of noise on marine habitats.

Michael’s book 'Hear Where We Are : Sound, Ecology, and Sense of Place' (Springer 2013) is an assembly of ideas and understandings of human and animal sound perception.

  • Deep Sea Mining - Richard Charter, Sr. Fellow of the Ocean Foundation, about their documentary DEFEND THE DEEP with Dr. Sylvia Earle
    2024/09/01

    Send us a text

In Episode 2, we talk with Richard Charter about the Ocean Foundation documentary DEFEND THE DEEP about the pending perils of deep sea mining.

Deep seabed mining (DSM) is a potential commercial industry attempting to mine mineral deposits from the seafloor, in the hopes of extracting commercially valuable minerals such as manganese, copper, cobalt, and nickel. However, this mining is posed to destroy a thriving and interconnected ecosystem that hosts a staggering array of biodiversity: the deep ocean. Questions also remain if the global economy needs these minerals at all: increasing innovation in battery technology and investment in the circular economy are suggesting alternatives to new mineral extraction.

This film was developed by Richard Charter a Senior Fellow at The Ocean Foundation, and produced by ‪@Ecodeo‬.

As the only community foundation for the ocean, The Ocean Foundation’s mission is to improve global ocean health, climate resilience, and the blue economy. We create partnerships to connect all peoples in the communities in which we work to the informational, technical, and financial resources they need to achieve their ocean stewardship goals.

For more information, check out The Ocean Foundation's Deep Seabed Mining resource page (https://oceanfdn.org/deep-seabed-mining/) in their Knowledge Hub.

Richard is a Senior Fellow with The Ocean Foundation and also serves, separately, as the Director of Friends of Coastal Coordination, a fiscally hosted project of The Ocean Foundation. He is a specialist in advocacy on ocean protection issues, including marine spatial planning, media techniques to secure conservation outcomes, and preventing and mitigating industrial impacts on ocean ecosystems. As Co-Chair of the National Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) Coalition, Richard was involved in initiating and maintaining the twenty-seven-year congressional moratorium on offshore oil and gas leasing which prevented new drilling along the U.S. West Coast, the Atlantic Coast, and Florida’s Gulf Coast, as well as in Alaska’s Bristol Bay. Richard also coordinated the local

  • Environmental Hero Captain Paul Watson Facing Possible Life Sentence - A radio interview with Lamya Essemlali President Sea Shepherd France + Rising Tide's 2023 podcast with Captain Paul Watson
    2024/09/01

    Send us a text

Welcome to the first episode of RER. This is an interview we did on July 26th with the President of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society in France, Lamya Essemlali about the July 21st arrest in Nuuk Greenland of Captain Paul Watson, Founder of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, co-founder of Greenpeace, and star of Whale Wars (who recently has been living in France and this occurred during the Paris Olympics.)

There are just a few more days until the 9/5 decision by Denmark to potentially extradite Captain Paul Watson to Japan” where he could face a life sentence.

On August 15, a Greenland court ruled that this 73-year-old Canadian American citizen “must continue to be detained until September 5th, in order to ensure his presence in connection with a decision on the issue of extradition to Japan. Captain Watson has appealed the court's decision.

Just prior to that court decision, we spoke with Lamya Essemlali. At that time, she was in Greenland visiting Captain Watson in jail. Our conversation with her is enlightening as to his condition and the circumstances surrounding this issue.

We include a statement issued by Jane Goodall Institute & Dr. Jane Goodall, a conservationist, humanitarian, & crusader for the ethical treatment of animals.

This legendary ocean activist and crew were refueling in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, a Danish territory on their way to "intercept" a new Japanese whaling factory vessel in the North Pacific when he was arrested. Japan accused Watson of causing damage to one of its whaling ships in the Antarctic two years earlier and causing injury.

News 8/15/24 - FRENCH 24 (Broadcasts to 522 million households worldwide.)

"Japan has accused Watson of injuring a Japanese crew member with a stink bomb intended to disrupt the whalers' activities in 2010. His lawyers on Thursday argued that he was innocent and demanded his immediate release. They asked to present video evidence to the court of the 2010 incident, which they said showed the Japanese crew members were not on deck when the stink bomb was thrown.

Lamya Essemlali, who was present at the court hearing, said "the court refused to view the video evidence ... which shows that the Japanese have fabricated evidence.” She added that Watson had not been granted a translator during the hearing, which she said was a violation of Danish law. She also stated that “it’s not normal, we didn’t underst
