To kick off Season 5 of the Stories to Create Podcast, Cornell Bunting sits down with Mr. Renaldo "Rip" Gates—a Life Coach, Inspirational Speaker, Soweto Panthers Coach, Business Developer, and Visionary. Originally from Cleveland Heights, Ohio, and now residing in Johannesburg, South Africa, Renaldo has achieved remarkable success as an International Professional Basketball Player, Head Coach, Talent Scout, International Business Owner, and Creative Writer.
In this episode, Renaldo shares his journey, starting with his childhood in Lakeview Saint Clare. He recalls how his father's work in television opened doors for their family to move to a better neighborhood in Ohio. Despite the improved surroundings, Renaldo faced daily challenges, both physically and emotionally, including frequent fights in school. He immersed himself in various sports but was especially drawn to basketball.
Renaldo also talks about his deep community involvement, regular church attendance, and witnessing his mother’s frequent hospital visits, which shaped his character. Driven by his dream of becoming an NBA player, he attended numerous basketball camps and eventually turned professional, leading to a career with the Soweto Panthers in NBA Africa.
The conversation takes a turn as Renaldo recounts a life-changing incident that landed him in the hospital for several days and ultimately ended his professional basketball career. Join us for this compelling interview as Renaldo opens up about his incredible journey, marked by triumphs and setbacks.
