S2E01: Empowering Holistics with Megan Pomarensky

  • サマリー

  • Why is it normal to think as a coach that your clients need you to train them for upwards of 3, 6 or even 12 months, 3 times a week? Many of us in the fitness industry slam the western medical world for establishing a co-dependant relationship between doctors and pharmaceuticals, yet we do the same thing under the guise of "proactive" health. I'm speaking from experience. I was right there in the mix. I worked for the big chains in Canada - we were encouraged to sell long term fitness packages and trained to have conversations with our clients about how much they needed us. Well, my guest today says "fuck the system!" - what if there was another way? Megan Pomarensky is a Certified Athletic Therapist, a Certified Functional Strength Coach, and a Certified Vinyasa Yoga Instructor, with a Master’s Degree in Rehabilitation Science. She is an internationally published author, speaker and educator, on various topics within the biopsychosocial and nervous-system regulation model of injury/pain assessment and management. Megan created Empowerment Rehabilitation and Training to empower people to navigate their persistent pain journey, through athletic therapy, strength training, and yoga. She has a clinical practice in Winnipeg Manitoba, and facilitates on-line sessions internationally. Megan has also worked as the head athletic therapist in the Canadian Junior Football League, as a Lead Medical Coordinator at the Canada Summer Games, as a medical team member at the World Master’s Ultimate Championships, and with various local and national athletes/teams of all levels. Megan has also taught at the university level, is on the National Board of Certification for Athletic Therapy, and assistant teaches in a world-wide continuing education mentorship program. At the same time, she was caught in her own loop of pain, (re)injury, and nervousness about how life was playing out, from experiencing a career-ending sports injury that led to a couple surgeries, and multiple other accidents and injuries. She spent years in and out of therapy, constantly living in pain and fear, and upset and frustrated at the need for reliance on someone else to fix her injuries or manage (or mask) her symptoms. After exploring a more holistic body/mind/soul approach to training (and life), that cycle ended, and Megan figured out the missing links in the traditional rehabilitation and medical models. Now, it’s her mission to share that, and help you to break free from the pain/injury cycles that you’ve been caught in, and empower you to move and live freely again. I get into everything from how broken the traditional system is to talking about music, mindset and how we can all take a lesson from goats. It's whack, guys. I tell ya, it's nice to be back behind the microphone. I'll drop a link to the song Meg and I collaborated on down below. Here are some of the highlights from today's show: Meg's wake up call (2:49)Why the current model of rehabilitation and athletic therapy is totally fucked (9:12)The day Megan "got it" and started her healing journey (13:18)The turning point in her healing journey (19:34)How music, meditation and yoga connected it all together for Meg (24:04)Taking the leap to a healthier lifestyle (29:36)Goats. And why they matter (35:39)Megan's radio DJ debut and "Road To Recovery" a 432Hz meditation track (43:57)Meg's definition of a P.R.O. (52:10) Fun Facts about Megan Her walk up song is... "Larger than Life" by The Backstreet Boys One PRO thing she does everyday is... listening to sonic meditations for one or all of gratitude, forgiveness, compassion Being creative means... Outwardly expressing my inner world Learn more about Meg here: meganpomarensky.com Go buy her song too: meganpomarensky.bandcamp.com For everything else hit me up at miketheschwartz.com and follow along on the gram at @ miketheschwartz --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/propodcastshow/message
