Why is it normal to think as a coach that your clients need you to train them for upwards of 3, 6 or even 12 months, 3 times a week? Many of us in the fitness industry slam the western medical world for establishing a co-dependant relationship between doctors and pharmaceuticals, yet we do the same thing under the guise of "proactive" health. I'm speaking from experience. I was right there in the mix. I worked for the big chains in Canada - we were encouraged to sell long term fitness packages and trained to have conversations with our clients about how much they needed us. Well, my guest today says "fuck the system!" - what if there was another way? Megan Pomarensky is a Certified Athletic Therapist, a Certified Functional Strength Coach, and a Certified Vinyasa Yoga Instructor, with a Master’s Degree in Rehabilitation Science. She is an internationally published author, speaker and educator, on various topics within the biopsychosocial and nervous-system regulation model of injury/pain assessment and management. Megan created Empowerment Rehabilitation and Training to empower people to navigate their persistent pain journey, through athletic therapy, strength training, and yoga. She has a clinical practice in Winnipeg Manitoba, and facilitates on-line sessions internationally. Megan has also worked as the head athletic therapist in the Canadian Junior Football League, as a Lead Medical Coordinator at the Canada Summer Games, as a medical team member at the World Master’s Ultimate Championships, and with various local and national athletes/teams of all levels. Megan has also taught at the university level, is on the National Board of Certification for Athletic Therapy, and assistant teaches in a world-wide continuing education mentorship program. At the same time, she was caught in her own loop of pain, (re)injury, and nervousness about how life was playing out, from experiencing a career-ending sports injury that led to a couple surgeries, and multiple other accidents and injuries. She spent years in and out of therapy, constantly living in pain and fear, and upset and frustrated at the need for reliance on someone else to fix her injuries or manage (or mask) her symptoms. After exploring a more holistic body/mind/soul approach to training (and life), that cycle ended, and Megan figured out the missing links in the traditional rehabilitation and medical models. Now, it’s her mission to share that, and help you to break free from the pain/injury cycles that you’ve been caught in, and empower you to move and live freely again. I get into everything from how broken the traditional system is to talking about music, mindset and how we can all take a lesson from goats. It's whack, guys. I tell ya, it's nice to be back behind the microphone. I'll drop a link to the song Meg and I collaborated on down below.
