Challenging the typical adoptee narratives, The Adopted Chameleon community activist and trauma-informed yoga therapy instructor, Lorah Gerald shares her experiences healing from adoption trauma. Creative Wellness Coach, Leela Davis and Expressive Arts Coach, Kelsay Myers get personal, political, and spiritual with Lorah in this episode. We discuss the power of adoptee stories in correcting social myths around the idea of being “grateful.” We explore the need to “fix” things or “figure it out” because adoptees are always searching for their identity, their biological family, or a therapist to connect to! We cover surrogacy, foster care, trauma responses, the higher risk of suicide for adoptees, somatic therapies, and “the science” behind the effect of early life separation from birth mothers in a system that buys and sells children, as well as alternatives to growing up in abusive homes in general. Lorah even shares a breathing exercise to help settle a highly activated system. We also cover the intuitive, the energetic, and various resources for adoptee healing that are out there, including Lorah’s own projects centered around giving voice to adoptee experiences. You won’t want to miss this timely conversation on the heels of the overturning of Roe v. Wade and Adoption Awareness Month!
